Please don't scrap it for the silver. Its worth far more than the silver that's in it.

fist time i played that, it happed to me. i was like, WTF?

MAN truck. probably only uses it to haul the boat to the lake twice a year.

This

I put a thin layer on pendants and earrings because they get less wear. But on rings, I give it good thick plating. This smith must have only given it a few seconds.

To be honest, I really can't advise you on this. I'm a trade shop and deal exclusively with retail stores and designers. I do not attempt to market myself. Perhaps Etsy?

majormal

Nice. Start selling it.

It's ruined. A cheap repair. I hate that.

Go to Stuller.com, find what you're looking for and then click on locate a jeweler on their front page. Stuller will not give you a price as they are wholesale only. But they are where many jewelers get their supplies. They have it all.

As a Jeweler and a mineral collector, I'll say this: I'm guessing that scale is not weighing in in troy oz.'s. So that nugget weighs about 5 ounces troy. Natural gold nuggets are not 99.9 fine but more like 90 percent gold so you have there about 4.5 troy ounces of gold. At current gold prices you have about $18,000 worth of gold. To a collector, it may be worth more than that, but to me, that's pure cash. I would throw it into my gold scrap and cash it in. When your grandfather collected it back in the 80's it was worth maybe $1000. Also I'll say that as a mineral specimen, it doesn't really have any redeeming qualities other than what it is. No alluring crystal structure. The problem is finding a way to maximize the gold value. Try to find a gold refiner that will pay a maximum price. A jewelry type of store will maybe pay you 60 percent. Good luck.

I assume those are rubies in the ring. What i would do is coat the whole ring with lots of flux and then gently heat it up to the melting point of the flux around where the burn crud is and hold it there for a few seconds, then cool to room temperature, then throw into the pickle solution for a while. Clean and polish. The rubies should take the heat.

Poor service. The darkened stones had skin oils behind them when they went to take the torch to it to size it. They didn't clean it well enough first. It was not inspected before going out, The broken joint shows it wasn't soldered correctly. It looks like the job was done by a speed king. Typical of trade shops. Smiths are expected to size 20-30 rings an hour. No time to do it correctly.

As a jeweler, I always advise that this will happen when I put one of these together. With small rounds its usually not a big deal. but a stone like this, it will be obvious. The stone is strung on the chain on the center of gravity so it will go where it wants. It needs to be attached below the center of gravity.

Its not gore. Just an inexpensive silver ring. 5 bucks worth of silver, $2 worth of low qual garnets assembled by cheap labor somewhere. It is what it is.

majormal

Obviously dyed

"Not all jewellers are good - the ones that are don't seek out more work." Very true. The work comes to them.

I have a friend who would drive like that intentionally. He would say "they got brakes"

Dumb people shouldn't be on the road "in groups"

Just go to a dairy farm and watch what those cows are schlogging around in. Splattering feces all over themselves, and then watch them milk these filthy animals. You would think twice about not pasteurizing the milk.

My first winters here I ruined a nice mountain bike by riding in the salty winter slush. After a couple winters it was a basket case. I switched to a cheap mountain bike to throw upon the trash heap of daily winter riding. I keep my nice bikes for summer.

I would try ultrasounding it and stream blasting it. If that didn't do it, it was probably not cleaned enough when sized and oils got burned under the stones. It can be difficult to clean. What I have done is coat the ring thoroughly with flux to protect the diamonds from burning and carefully heat the area till the flux melts then pickle it. This completes the burning of the oils and comes out clean. Polish and viola.

I'm not in Utah, and I hope this law helps, but in Minneapolis, there is little traffic enforcement. Its like the wild west out there. Fortunately, the city has ben building protected bike lanes with high curbs to separate them in high traffic areas.
