Yes, I get that. What I'm getting at is the "massive amount of danger" from "so much as scratching the seed". The wiki page says that the needles contain about 5 mg of the toxin per 1 g. Let's say the seeds are ten times more concentrated, at 50 mg per 1 g. Lethal dose for humans is 3 mg per 1 kg of body weight, so let's say 200 mg (a person a little under 70 kg). That's 4 g of seeds. A single seed probably weighs significantly less than 1 gram but let's say it does weigh 1 gram. Now, how much toxin do you get in "so much as scratch" vs the whole seed? Is a tiny fraction of a quarter of the lethal dose really a "massive amount of danger" that would "mess you up in in a lot of different ways"?

I watched a Cacho Tirao concert just yesterday. (I know he's not from Spain but I guess it counts.)
michalfabik
If you so much as scratch the seed while removing the fleshy part, you're in massive amounts of danger.
That sounds exaggerated. A healthy adult probably wouldn't die from chewing and eating one seed. What are the specific risks of scratching the surface of the seed with your fingernail and then eating the red fruit?
michalfabik
What? What "revolver"? Where in what I wrote above is the risk of dying instantly? How did you establish that the toxins "leeching" into the aril are as deadly as a bullet to the head? And even if I did chew on the seeds and swallow them, I can still make myself vomit and seek help. How do you do that when playing Russian roulette?
You're just fearmongering.
michalfabik
Only this isn't unexpected. You can plan and save up for it for five years.
michalfabik
I don't see how that's comparable. A single yew seed most likely wouldn't kill an adult, it would just make you sick. If you swallowed it whole, without chewing, chances are nothing would happen, depending on how fast it would pass through your system. (Birds actually feed on yew berries and nothing happens to them because they don't digest the seeds.) Now consider the amount of toxins in one seed vs the amount that would leech into the aril from a broken seed, and also the probability of this happening in a significant amount of berries out of the fistful that I normally eat.
Out of the hundreds berries I ate recently, it happened exactly once that a seed broke in two in my mouth. (I didn't bite on it, it just fell apart as I removed the flesh.)

They grow just beside the sidewalk on my way to work so I always pick a handful an eat them on the go one by one. Put in mouth, crush with your tongue against the roof of your mouth to separate the seed, spit out seed. I must have eaten like half a kilo of them over the past week. Perfectly safe.

No však to ty taky (teď jsi tomu ještě "pomohl" tím "cringe"), tak jsem ti to napsal.

I always stew them like when you're making goulash and I've never had any adverse reaction. I've also heard from multiple sources that they're incompatible with alcohol. Again, I don't remember having any issues personally but maybe skip the beer after dinner to play it safe.

Zašto bi neko u današnje vrijeme mijenjao vjeru umjesto da se jednostavno odrekne tih budalaština? To je ono "ne valja mi kuga, bolje mi daj rak".
michalfabik
That's the hardest thing to believe, when you're that depressed.
Oh I can believe it alright, on a rational level. I just can't bring myself to care.
michalfabik
You're overthinking this. Stand at the side of a major road around city limits where it's safe for cars to stop and stretch out your thumb.

Reminds me of the old Soviet "I only read obituaries" joke.

Well this whole post is about pedophilia, i.e. abuse of pre-pubescent children. An adult woman having sex with a teenager who happens to be under the local age of consent is a whole different problem.

Nobody ever calls a molested 5-year-old "lucky".

I think you accidentally responded to a wrong comment.

Her late teens were 30 years ago. How did you come to the conclusion she's the same kind of person she was back then? I know I'm not the same kind of person I was 30 years ago and I don't think I know anyone who is.

I highly recommend visiting Romania. Hitchhiking is quite popular there with people from all walks of life. I stopped for a mother with two kids on their way to the doctor's, a man in a suit carrying a briefcase (obviously a clerk of some sort, maybe even a lawer) or, most crazy of all, an old lady with a stack of wooden window frames who was travelling to the neighbouring village to have them painted. Quite a few of them were lone women and they didn't seem to be worried at all, like you often hear from Americans and whatnot. Romanian drivers sometimes expect payment but it's normally quite little, like half of what you would pay for the bus on the same route, or even less. This is not universal though: some drivers even take pride in declining your money.
Overall, I really like the idea that if I pick up hitchhikers as a driver, it makes hitchhiking more popular, which in turn makes it more reliable for me when I hitchhike myself. Plus, fewer cars on the roads.
AFAIK, hitchhiking was semi-institutionalized in Poland before 1989, as measure to save fuel. Drivers had special hitchhiking logbooks which hitchhikers would sign and the drivers could then get a discount on fuel depending on the number of hitchhikers and distance, or something like that. I've never hitchhiked in Poland but I'd expect the sentiment surrounding hitchhiking might have carried over to this day, at least to a small degree.

I'm talking about rear fog lights.
michalfabik
I'm talking about rear fog lights, as was /u/yottyboy above.
michalfabik
On my car, you can't switch on rear ones without switching front ones first. On some cars they're independent though.

Maybe it would make more sense to educate people rather than to get rid of an obviously useful feature? How do you drive in fog, heavy rain or snowstorm?
I didn't say "a quarter of a lethal dose", did I? I said "a tiny fraction of a quarter of the lethal dose". If one seed is a quarter of the lethal dose, how much is "so much as a scratch" of one seed?
