Thankyou so much for your detailed answer! The totem is flat on the underside. What do you recommend I use in place of the brass piece as a spacer?

BTW, when I read out your reply to my Mum it totally jogged her memory - she remembers that in addition to the leather strap breaking, something had been lost or broken that was between the totem and the flute.
