If I hadn’t self diagnosed when I did, I would be dead. The professional diagnosis got me better supports and accommodations later, but the self diagnosis is what saved my life. Period.

I had sort of the opposite experience with AP classes. Those kids were actually more rude and judgmental. I was definitely the only autistic person in my classes, and it showed.

I mean, I was just as autistic as a child as I am as an adult. You don’t have to be emotionally damaged to be touch avoidant 🤷🏻‍♀️

I hate that one the most. I’m autistic, but come from a Muslim family. Autistic people from other cultural backgrounds are often left out of the discussion. Islam actually allowed for me to “hide” a lot better than western culture (at least as a woman.) I wasn’t expected to be outgoing and bubbly. Quiet was just fine. I also enjoy dressing modestly because I feel it gives me privacy over my body.

I consider myself to be an empathetic person. But I often have delayed emotional responses, so i appear not to care. It’s frustrating.

I desperately need those in my mouth.
