You forgot doctorate on the poll. I work with two people with doctorate level degrees.

Further, if your justification for hazing a probie is that you're "testing them to make sure you can trust them with your life", you're full of shit. That doesn't even make sense. You're just a bully who happens to be in a position of power over someone.

Yeah I never is my teeth on any pipe. Not on cigars either.

The stubby one below the churchwarden is cone 6, the rest are cone 10.

For the glaze fire I invert them on a stand of high fire clay about the size and shape of a pyrometric cone that I cover in a layer of wadding. The tip of that cone goes into the bowl. And then there's a second stand with a short piece of nichrome wire bent at a 90 degree angle that inserts into the hole in the tip.

I was at the playground with my kid and she fell off the monkey bars and started SCREAMING. I got up and walked over to check on her. Meanwhile a bunch of the other kids' moms went sprinting past me and surrounded her. They were looking at me like I'm an asshole for apparently not caring about my own kid.

  1. I do care about my kids

  2. I figured it would be an act of futility to try to explain to them that if it took me two seconds to get there versus the six seconds that it actually took me, it would have exactly zero effect on the outcome, and acting hysterical most definitely will have a negative effect.

She was perfectly fine by the way.

Might be easier to make a tutorial myself. Words are hard.

mtd074

Thank you. I'm partial to the Rhodesian at the top.

The churchwarden is unglazed, the rest are glazed but only on the outside. I slightly prefer glazed just because of the smooth feel on the lips. I would definitely like to look into adding mouthpieces to future builds.

Thanks. They're all fully fired in a proper ceramics kiln so structurally they are essentially converted to rock at this point. I have a few more in the pipeline (heh) that I will post in the next couple weeks.

Got a degree in materials science. Working a blue collar union job that requires a GED, making almost twice as much as I was bringing home as a scientist.

mtd074

I did 25 years as an Army musician. It's a great line of work for a musician who's looking to make a comfortable living and not be a famous rockstar. Highly recommend.

mtd074

Degree: Materials Science. Career 1: military musician (retired). Career 2: firefighter (current). No regrets.

I get filled with a quiet rage whenever I see landscaping that's intentionally designed to obscure the view of a fire hydrant. They are generally placed out in the open and painted bright colors for a reason. Being able to quickly locate a hydrant and access it could literally be the difference between life and death.

Anyone going for a ride in any of the aircraft must be wearing a parachute with the automatic actuation device turned on. Professional skydiver. Years ago we had an incident where a local photographer talked his way onto the plane to take pictures of people jumping out. After the last skydiver left, he set down his camera and followed them out. He wasn't wearing a parachute.

Also a firefighter. I'm lucky to work for the second highest paying city relative to local cost of living in the US. My union is amazing. The benefits are great. Having weekdays off regularly is a HUGE perk. And I love what I do. Not bad for a job that only requires a GED.

mtd074

Same. Apparently I don't "look" like a skydiver, whatever that means. Even people who have known me for a while have been shocked when I pull up on my sportbike. "I never would have guessed in a million years that you, of all people, would ride a motorcycle".

I guess skinny Asian nerds don't do fun things?

mtd074

I have been told that I'm quite…filling.

mtd074

Nope. And I have no interest. My hobbies are skydiving and motorcycles.

mtd074

I'm the rare Asian who is overly precise in my driving and I have dyscalculia. Basic two-digit addition? Can't do it in my head. Doesn't help that my dad is a math savant who can look at (very) long division and square roots and just knows the answer in less than a second.

mtd074

Sports: motorcycles

Nutrition: pass

Arts: pass

Psych: evolutionary psych

Stem: physics

Yep. Got 5s in calculus AB and BC. Got As in four semesters of college calculus. But ask me to add 12 and 17 in my head, or what time is 20 minutes after 3:46: I'll spend minutes thinking and likely give a wrong answer. Good things calculators are ubiquitous if you're looking to get into engineering.

mtd074

I was a scientist for a decade and bored out of my mind spending all day in a lab with no windows making as much money as possible for someone else. I took my city's for firefighter exam, nailed it, and haven't looked back.

mtd074

I hate the way we humans are destroying our planet, but my favorite hobby is skydiving which has a comparatively large carbon footprint.

mtd074

Interesting. I definitely don't go 100 percent unless I'm in full daylight. Too bright and it drains the battery so much faster.
