I explain to Claude AI what feels/is wrong and together we troubleshoot. I also run uptime-kuma and glances also a daily hard-drive health script that emails me daily.

heres how AI describes SmartTools (often just called smartmontools) is a suite of utilities for monitoring and analyzing hard drives and SSDs using the S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) data built into most modern drives.
Here's what it's used for:
Health Monitoring
Reads the SMART attributes reported by the drive itself — things like reallocated sectors, spin-up time, read error rates, temperature, and power-on hours. These attributes can give early warning of a drive heading toward failure.
Scheduled Self-Tests
Can run short or long self-tests directly on the drive's internal diagnostics firmware — not just reading SMART data, but actually exercising the drive and reporting errors.
Failure Prediction
By watching trends in attributes like reallocated sectors or pending sectors over time, you can often catch a dying drive before it fails outright. This is exactly how your Patriot Burst Elite was flagged — pending sectors showed up in SMART data.
Alerting
The smartd daemon runs in the background and can send email alerts when a drive's health degrades or a self-test fails.
Drive Info
Reports detailed drive identity information — model, serial number, firmware version, interface type, capacity, rotation speed (or SSD status).

Why a reboot "fixes" a Plex library disappearance
When Plex appears to lose its entire library and a reboot restores it, the most common underlying cause isn't Plex itself — it's a storage event that happened underneath it.
The bad sector / kernel panic chain
When Plex's scanner or metadata agent reads sequentially across your media drives, it touches every file. If it hits a reallocated or pending sector on a spinning disk (or a failing SSD like your old Patriot Burst Elite), the kernel's storage subsystem — specifically the block layer or the driver — can hang waiting for the I/O to complete or retry. Depending on the driver, the filesystem type, and how the disk is connected (SATA, USB, NVMe), this can cascade into one of several outcomes:
- The drive goes offline — the kernel detaches it, the mount point goes dead, and Plex sees no files where the library used to be. It doesn't "lose" its database; it just can't stat the paths anymore.
- The filesystem remounts read-only — Linux's self-protection when I/O errors are detected on a mounted filesystem. Plex's database writes start failing, and depending on timing, it may corrupt its own sqlite database or simply stop responding.
- A full kernel panic — rarer, but more likely with USB-attached drives or buggy firmware. The entire system goes down hard.
A reboot clears the I/O error state, the drive comes back online (possibly reallocating the bad sector in the process), and everything looks fine — until the scanner hits the next pending sector.
Why it looks like a Plex problem
Plex logs the symptoms, not the cause. You'll see things like "library not found," scanner timeouts, or database errors — nothing pointing at the hardware. dmesg is where the truth lives: look for ata, sd, blk_update_request, I/O error, or EXT4-fs error entries timestamped around the crash.
Why scanning specifically triggers it
Normal playback reads linearly through a single file and at a controlled rate. A library scan is an aggressive, random-access sweep across every drive simultaneously — it's essentially a stress test. It's one of the most reliable ways to tickle a marginal sector that casual use would never touch.
(deleted a bunch for brevity)Plex is the canary, not the problem. The drive is the problem, and the scanner is just the one that walks into the gas.

If I may.... ask AI how to install smartools and the command to check all your drives. pastes results to any major AI and have it analyze the output. Thats a good start, also have your system logs analyzed by AI. If plex is dropping the library's theres a problem. If you hate the idea of using AI then nevermind, it was only a suggestion. Good Luck.

Dear OP, Don't do anything that will get you arrested and "stop caring" about controlling things. You'll do fine. Also stop listening to music for now, try talk radio. I'm 62 now and a midlife crisis survivor.
