Why do you have old people skin?

mythril

A nap turned you into Dr Octopus?

Oh man. You should question the things you assume - I never stated I was better than anyone. I have no intention to show that - I don't even believe politeness = goodness - and I don't care. I offer the correction because it just literally irks me to see impoliteness (and I also would appreciate if someone else corrected me if I express myself incorrectly). That's it. With the way you're speaking, you probably won't believe it, but it's true.

You're self inserting whatever intention you're ascribing to me. You should genuinely question why you're doing that.

You are not smarter than the commenter you are nitpicking.

Literally everyone who can read understood what they were saying. Strictly following grammar rules is for formal settings.

Virtually everyone looks down on this kind of correction because we all know it is rooted in insecurity and the chance to demonstrate that you know something better than someone else.

Gross.

This game is excellent, one of the best I've ever played. The atmosphere and conceptual integrity is top tier. This feels like a cousin of Fallout (1, the original) with a little less campiness and a less gloom, but with excellent visuals, a unique atmosphere and almost no jank. I personally prefer a little more on the RPG mechanics side but I won't complain about that when a game is this well made. Also I played the first time through very thoroughly (40 hours, all dlc, went to every nook and cranny afaict) and only noticed like 4 minor bugs, none of which affected the playthrough.

As far as sequel / DLC:

I'd love a sequel, especially if it involves a coverup that explores reputation destruction / other methods modern governments employ to keep things quiet. Also it invites an espionage angle where foreign governments try to infiltrate proclaimed disaster zones on the assumption that they are coverups for advanced research, either with individual spies or outright attempts at invasion. It would also be interesting if the Brits took the same lesson and the next game involves you as a spy infiltrating a coverup in a foreign land. Or maybe multiple such missions (Three mile island, Chernobyl, etc) before some unrelated climax. Overall I trust the writers that made Atomfall 1 to do a bang up job next time around. This surely isn't Bethesda stock. I hope they go the route of the next game announcing a canonical ending to the prior game, but it could just as easily be MOST SECRET or somewhere in between.

As far as keeping some of the existing mechanics: between Blue Oberon being used in the production of training stimulants and the Red Strain allowing the player to craft an improvised stimulant and the bit of lore surrounding synthetic Oberon I think there are some interesting ways to preserve the concept.

Some critiques / suggestions:
* Anything but the barter system. In real life trade lands on a currency/currency substitute very quickly, usually inside of a week, 5 years without a currency is simply not plausible. I don't think there is a single example of a group of modern humans as large as the one in this game not having some common currency for as long as 5 months, let alone 5 years. People would sooner keep ledgers and use tally sticks than this kind of barter.

* Consistency. I just tried to start a bow run and Molly doesn't have a bow manual... why? I know I can get it at the castle, don't @ me.

* On that note I think it would've been far more plausible that people had various bows than firearms. I doubt under that kind of duress that the area would have had a lasting supply of ammunition 5 years in, unless people were hand loading, or there was some sort of production in the area

* models jerk around a bit much and cause missing (this is true for ranged too but seems more drastic at close range for some reason)

* the game needs some way to block

* a weapon I've recently thrown and then step over should probably be picked up and equipped automatically, or at least there ought to be some action I can take that makes this much more fluid

* I personally would love mechanics where movement direction is taken in to account for the swing's trajectory, like the Star Wars Jedi Knight games, or Dark Messiah of Might and Magic or Rune and a ton of others that have borrowed the basic concept.

* It seems weird that I can't wear armor of any sort when so many of the enemies have some kind of armor going on

* the stealth system seems very weak and doesn't seem to help with anything other than humans, which feels odd, I hope this is improved, especially if they go the spy route with the story (PLEASE PLAY Thief*** if you are a dev reading this. The stealth mechanics in Thief are WAY BETTER than Fallout's cheap simulacra).

I don't have an iphone, so your mileage may vary but there are the community edition ports:

https://github.com/alexbatalov/fallout1-ce#ios

https://github.com/alexbatalov/fallout2-ce#ios

Both claim to work with Steam or GOG versions.

mythril

Nonsense. If they published an excellent Tetris clone under the title "Fallout Blocks" I would say it was a terrible Fallout game and literally everyone (except you, apparently) would understand exactly what I am saying.

mythril

Do metacritic / steam scores objectively rate how good a Fallout game is at being a Fallout game? Or is it subjectively rating how much the person rating it likes it?

1.) 100 subjective takes do note make an objective take.

2.) A good game is not automatically a good Fallout game.

mythril

Mostly I am comparing this to 1 and New Vegas. I have only played through 2 a couple of times and I don't remember the details of it much.

> Most of what you've said simply doesn't apply to Fallout 3

The entire vault 101 experience in 3 is live-an-episode-of-a-50s-sitcom camp nonsense, until it turns sour, at which point you can only fight your way out.

Arefu / the family is both campy and eldritch nonsense.

Armitage / Harkness / Dr. Zimmer are pod people paranoia and identity crises.

Petrovita.

Little Lamplight.

The Mechanist/Antagonist.

The hairstyles.

>3 has a good amount of RPG elements

True but Fallout 3 removed traits and a ton of the perks were just straightforward +10 skill buffs.

They clearly didn't understand how to write speech checks mechanically or as dialogue writers, and largely still don't get it.

Adapting the aiming system from 1&2 into V.A.T.S. was a stroke of genius, and the game wouldn't have been playable without it IMO, so I'll give them that one.

Hacking and lockpicking are better than what they were prior (even if I am not fond of either implementation).

Fallout 4 brought some elements that I think the series really needs going forward, specifically settlements and supply lines, although 4's implementation is very tedious, and the caravan implementation is absurd.

Sneak was fairly well adapted, properly keeping sneak sniper as the easiest playthrough for the most part.

A few skills were merged and rearranged, mostly in a positive way.

> As for the society/leaders/faction conflict part of your critique, it would be nice to get some concrete examples of what you mean.

3 has post civil war reconstruction / new deal vibes all over it. The main quest is essentially a public works project. "Head of State" / Hannibal Hamlin is a story about abolitionism and Abe Lincoln.

In 4 The railroad is a clumsy and obvious allusion to the underground railroad.

The minutemen feels like empty cosplay of the actual minutemen.

Virtually none of the assumed "good" characters are motivated by incentives, rather they have professed ideals and as long as they are the assumed "good" guys they have no personal incentives beyond that in any functional sense, you can't change outcomes much by reasoning with characters or by altering factions that support each other.

In New Vegas you can undermine the factions in many ways, in 3 / 4 you pretty much just beat them into submission, with a bit of wiggle room.

> The common complaint on here is that things are too ruined centuries after the war so I find this funny.

People in general overestimate how permanent the built world is. At 200 years in, most single story buildings would be buried in vegetation, and skyscrapers might be standing but would probably be so compromised that being near one would be a crazy thing to do. Freeze/thaw cycles, rain/rust, and vegetation are very powerful.

-----------

IMO Synths in particularly pollute Fallout too much. The idea was good enough to deserve it's own franchise, but bolting it into Fallout changes the whole point into a completely different thing, and I have no confidence that Bethesda has the discipline to constrain them to 3/4.

The eldritch thing is goofy and feels like a waste of potential. The camp could've just been done in remnants of the old world culture and it would've actually fit (like finding a holotape of some old sitcom or something). Characters born 200 years after the fall of civilization that behave in their "real" lives like they are playing out a 50s sitcom is really annoying without some reason as to why they are doing it (Tunnel Snakes / Atom Cats). In FNV the families had reasons motivating their affectations, primarily encouragement from House. The kings formed a cult of personality around old records, clothes and holotapes.

mythril

Are they good games? Yes. Are they good Fallout games? Sometimes, sorta... they look Fallout-y most of the time, spend half of their content budget on dumb camp and eldritch nonsense, and pollute the core concept with identity crisis and programmable pod people paranoia, all while reducing the RPG elements into first person shooter mush.

They don't have an even remotely realistic idea of how societies evolve or how factions go through conflict, how a person might become a leader of a faction or how to write convincing dialogue.

Their idea of writing realistic faction conflict is to take a section of U.S. history and rewrite one of their factions as fulfilling the role of a real faction from that history, but not the nitty-gritty stuff, just the surface level story kids are told in elementary school, almost completely devoid of personal incentives and realistic motivations.

The built world in their games is far too intact and well maintained. Things decay in reality, rapidly. Unmaintained buildings vanish fast. Paint fades. Things get covered in dirt and dust to the point of being completely buried. Food rots into indistinguishable dust.

That said if the game wasn't called Fallout 4 it would easily be one of my favorite games of all time anyway. I dislike it as a Fallout game not because it is a bad game, but because it doesn't seem to care about it's roots or context any deeper than the paintjob.

For the catalysts I just use whatever is cheapest at the moment. It probably was imbued and I confused it with Intrinsic.

mythril

Cool, so sounds like for the most part I just didn't understand what was available.

mythril

There is actually a filter option to add catalyst cost. I set it to rouns 20, 40 or 60 as I assume this will be more or less min and/or max cost per cheapest catalysts out there. Or did you mean something different

I was thinking more like sampling and caching the exchange rates of catalysts from the API and adding in the cost to 20q a jewelry item as an option, Last I saw intrinsic are 3/c so to 20q a jewelry item would be around 6.67c, tacking on 20c distorts the cost of low value uniques (400k dust) enough to make that feature not worth using in that scenario.

I just recently added an option to filter by size, so if you limit max to 2, you'll pretty much achieve what you describe :)

I haven't tinkered with it yet, but I am more often inclined to exclude jewelry than to exclude non-jewelry. If this achieves that, sounds good.

Why do you consider it a pain? There is actually a big chance that this corrupted version will be worth more Dust because of a corrupted implicit. I think that as far as buying uniques for disenchanting goes, it shouldn't matter or be beneficial at best. But please let me know if you have something else in mind!

I had no idea that it would alter the dust value with implicit, never noticed. Is it too cumbersome to filter out corrupted but unchanged items? (need to know what the base/uniqs default implicit is and apply a not filter based on that unless there are two implicits - at least one unique I'm aware of has a different implicit than the base by default).

https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Replica_Atziri%27s_Foible

Unrelated: have you noticed a correlation between gold purchase fees and dust value?

Also: might be a good idea to put a little "how to use this tool" video somewhere that includes things like why corrupted items are worth seeing.

mythril

Maybe add cost to 20q the item (most recent cheapest catalyst for jewelry, relevant quality currency for weapons and armor) to the cost calculation?

Or maybe a simple way to filter out jewelry class items

Also the "trade" link by default allows corrupted items, which is kind of a pain, why not have that be a toggle on the filter side/for the whole column and have the search exclude the unchosen option?

I've played 10 or so this morning of that 10, 3 were not self-built control decks, and I only won 1 of those.

mythril

Played MTG IRL for a couple of years, decided to hop on arena recently and the ranks reset about a week afterwards. I have played like 15 hands since then and all of them have been against control and I haven't had a single win, likely due to the fact that I am using essentially a starter deck with 2-4 upgrades and they have fully self-constructed decks... how are they this far into making this game and still don't have some kind of deck power matching? Probably going to quit playing because this feels like a straight up P2W game design.

If high fees are what keeps it a good store of value by preventing trading then lightning is a bad idea because it reduces transaction costs and enables trading.
