Well the aliens might, of course

Markdown needs post-processing for viewing if you want nicely formatted tables. And not all Markdown versions support tables the same way. But in 100 years it's will still be ready to view HTML, even if the program you are using to do it is no longer called a browser.

It might be just a phase. He could grow out of it completely by the time he's, say, 41.

J. Edgar.

But I am about to replace it with a vacuum/mop combo machine, and that's going to need a different name.

nderflow

Right but it also means no use of other similar things in production code paths, such as - I assume - `assert!`.

Different parts of Google take different approaches to "cannot happen" scenarios. See https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src/+/main/styleguide/c++/checks.md for the position for C++ code in Chromium, for example.

Most Google C++ code bases I've worked with personally entirely forbid the use of fatal assertions in production code. Inside Google, Rust and C++ occupy the same "ecological niche" in effect, so it's not surprising that they bothered to document this particular policy for Rust code.

For Google yes. Nobody wants www.google.com to serve a 500 because somebody wants to skip thinking about error handling and deal with it on a later change.

For organizations which aren't Google, well they can do what they want, Google isn't writing their style guide.

Main differences are;

  • Type system. Some languages are weakly typed (e.g. accept source code that adds an integer to a string) and some are strongly typed (e.g. support Typeful Programming to varying degrees
  • Compiled/interpreted: wherever the program is covered to machine instructions at time the program is built or at the time it is run. Systems that do the former generally produce faster programs, systems that do the latter can be more convenient. The performance differences are are often negligible, and sometimes insurmountably prohibitive
  • Safe/Unsafe: quite a subtle distinction, and I won't take the time to explain. In short and to speak loosely, this has to do with how much you can conclude about the program's correctness from the fact that the compiler accepted it.
  • Declarative/Procedural: do you want to tell the computer what you want, or how to do it?
  • Managed/Unmanaged: do you want to write the resource management code yourself (and be responsible for it's correctness) or have the language do it? It's a performance versus simplicity trade off. The analogy between a manual and an automatic car gearbox suggests itself and is only mostly spurious.

Good software too. The only 8 bit microcomputer I ever used which had a well defined distinction between the operating system and the language interpreter. OSCLI, OSWORD, etc.

Swans: try White Light From the Mouth of Infinity or The Burning World.

Some readers of course are already not speaking to their family.

Use the 'yank' pedal. If you don't have pedals, what are you even doing using Emacs? At least C-x C-c will still work.

nderflow

In the UK, sure. In Ireland, it introduces unhelpful ambiguity.

Another example is that, some years ago, the best knee surgeons in the world were in Northern Ireland.

nderflow

Indeed. I had eye surgery in Ireland a few years ago, decided to use private healthcare (someone recommended a particular surgeon), but found that my insurer didn't cover that hospital. I called the insurer. They suggested I upgrade my policy to a better one which also covered that hospital. I wasn't enthusiastic because the cost was likely high.

The call centre person asked me to wait a few moments, asked me how long the treatment would last, and I said, maximum 2 days. They gave me a quote for 2 days of cover in the upgraded policy. It came to €12.

Honestly they’d have to be a lot closer than 35m to see anything, unfortunately.

I don't have any non-waterproof hiking outfits. If I see one in a shop, I leave it on the rail unpurchased, next to the depleted Uranium wetsuits.

I don’t think he knows about second best friend, Pip.

They should clearly sleep fully clothed like a normal person. And with a hat on Sundays.

My experience was very different. Between 1992 and 2005 I applied to 10 jobs and got 9 offers (I accepted 3). I don't believe that would happen now.

nderflow

You mean the conflict began back when Russia agreed to guarantee Ukraine's safety in return for it giving up its thermonuclear weapons?

nderflow

In between the first and last, obviously. More specifically, when I was in my teens.

The vendor should find some other business to debug its unreliable product.

It's senseless for your wife to double down when she already lost a customer because of this.
