If a worker is considering putting in an extra 5 hours in a week on overtime pay is that really a smart move? Is it really wise to hit the books after work to build new skills and get a raise? Maybe it's better to take up a side enterprise. Fix up and sell old cars, renovate the garage for an AirBNB, turn a bedroom into a neighborhood nail salon. Participate in the gig economy which doesn't show up in economic statistics on wages. This is especially the case if the side gig avoids tax and regulatory burdens and builds up hard assets as an inflation hedge.

Another factor is the quality of goods that can be purchased. Just look at electronics. The capabilities that a given amount of labor can purchase is tremendous. The real wages may not have risen for hourly workers, but the size of the home, the performance of the heating and cooling, the size of the TV and performance of the car have improved substantially. Of course that may be due to debt.

Similar economic scenario to the grass seed and peppermint growers in the Willamette valley or the cranberry producers on the Oregon coast. A high capital low margin type of business.
