You’re so lucky to have had this ride with him. My mare passed away 1.5 years ago. She spent the first years of her life a slave to the show world and being repeatedly traumatized by people.

She was the most complicated horse I’ve ever worked with, and I had her for almost 10 years: she was my whole world, too.

I’m sure she (Cece) and Dobs will get on famously 🌈 🪽

Yes you are a beginner, and he may be green, but I personally don’t think that there was anything that you were doing that caused this. The folks that are saying you are landing hard on his back? I disagree completely. You have moments where you semi lose your balance, but the horse is never punished by it.

Additionally, the horse does not look stressed out or tense to me. He’s sound, he’s got a beautiful gate, he’s got a lovely expression on his face. He’s a really good looking horse actually.

I think I’d call this a perfect storm of 3 things:

  1. Windy Day, he may not be spooky (and I agree, this doesn’t appear to be a spook).. but windy fall days like this can make a horse fresh/exuberant unexpectedly

  2. The gate to the arena is wide open. And you are circling past it repeatedly. Some horses will get a little cheeky and sneaky and if they feel they find an opportunity to eject the rider and run back to the barn - they will take it. I was once jumping in an outdoor arena- gate wide open. I cantered up to a vertical on the diagonal (in the direction of the gate), the horse tapped it with his toes, landed and immediately bucked and catapulted me off his back. Happened so damn fast. I’m an experienced rider (30+ years) and the horse was a seasoned pro- but it was getting on feeding time, he must have felt my weight shift just right, and next thing you know I’m on my back in the ring and he’s halfway up the hill to the barn. Shit happens.

  3. You’re learning and he’s green.

I tend to pride myself for my ability to sit through bucks/bad behavior and not fall off, but there’s no way I could have sat that out. He knew exactly what he was doing. Eject you and exit the arena.

Pantry, above the microwave, bathroom shelf, inside bathroom vanity mirror, the freezer, or outside on the front porch.

If you’re looking for a lost phone, always check the garden. My phone has spent a few nights outside- in my raised garden bed next to the tomatoes and once next to the zucchini.

Practice holding your 2 point at the trot. Grab mane/martingale to help with balance at first. Hold it for a little bit at a time, and increase over time.

So maybe hold it on the short ends to start. Then the long sides. And eventually you’ll be able to hold yourself in that position all the way around the ring- ideally without having to grab mane or tack to help your balance.

It’s a process. It’ll take time and dedication.. but it’s a very reliable way to get your body in the right position.

Just remember to keep your heels down, & you want a straight line from shoulder-hip-heel.

It’s a fabulous exercise for your legs and your balance. Also can be done at the canter!

Btw: you’ve got quite a naturally good position and posture from what I can see. You just need strengthening and time in the saddle. Great work!

I’ve never met anyone who regularly rides horses who hasn’t fallen off.

I consider it a rite of passage !
