It was court ordered. They didn't get to choose.

I think they must believe that he's lying. I mean Kate says in the appendix that people with mental illness are prone to fabrication. This isn't true (especially because she literally has never said what mental illness she believes he has.) But I assume people think he's lying for attention or money, and they don't want to critically interrogate what they believe "mental illness" is.

There was a cop who died in a sperm donation clinic because their liquid nitrogen leaked and displaced all of the oxygen. I learned about that incident at a job where I regularly worked with liquid nitrogen, and I still think about him way too often. What an ignominious place to die.

purpleplatapi

Just the usual. If you work nights, that's detrimental. If you don't lift properly (yes you really will have to lift 50 pounds), if you spend too much time sitting without doing rounds. There's nothing specific I can think of. Just wash your hands before you eat lol. And even then, like you'll get a stomach bug, but it's not going to kill you or have long term health effects. You'll just have food poisoning.

purpleplatapi

Well yeah because there's no saving it at this point. We're well into mitigation, and that's.... Well I guess we'll see how it's going. Hit me back in ten years lol. We're either going no meat zero emissions or we've got like two centuries of human society left.

I get how she became an alcoholic.

Don't listen to what people on Reddit say. They only ever complain. Now it is harder to get straight conservation jobs, but you will have options. They're really going to need people to install solar panels and windmills and do environmental assessments for those jobs. I am confident you will find something you can do after graduation, everyone in my graduation class (within the past 5 years) found something even if the park ranger dream didn't pan out.

purpleplatapi

What kind of animals? Birds? Insects? Reptiles? Small mammals? Large ones? Fish?

purpleplatapi

Yeah lol I recently checked into a hotel when I was on vacation. They were doing a survey, trying to collect data on business travelers, and I was like, I'm not going to tell you the company I work for, I'm on vacation. And he pauses and goes, you're the first one on vacation all night. It was in Kansas City, which granted is maybe not a premier vacation spot, but there's got to be at least a little tourism.

I don't really know how to put this delicately, but rest assured there's plenty of overweight lesbians who use the apps. If you're worried about being judged for your bodyweight you can always just make it a rule to match with them, and or to only accept skinnier people who match with you first, that way you can rest easier that they don't mind.

purpleplatapi

I mean, I'm sure she doesn't, but I'd be more inclined to think it's probably the Russian prison PTSD.

purpleplatapi

He's in Ironman, that's probably what you'd recognize him from.

purpleplatapi

Oh totally but they'll just cut those resources. At least that's what I'm hoping for. We don't need to this much stuff, and I don't want billions of people to die. We can all do mostly without meat and air travel and eat a more localized diet and cut the fast fashion.

purpleplatapi

It literally says on the bag "what does it mean?"

purpleplatapi

So? The poor people will have a chance to take over the middle classes current jobs. And the people in countries most affected by climate change get an escape hatch. I fail to see your point.

purpleplatapi

Is that such a bad thing? With climate change and all? Don't we want less people utilizing resources? I'm positive we'll stabilize eventually, but in the short term (the next 200 years) it's not a terrible idea to not have kids, or at the very least to not go past replacement level.

purpleplatapi

Well it's entry level. The hope is that you get promoted. It's one thing to not make enough money starting out, but you have to work towards something.

purpleplatapi

I guess the assumption is that eventually your parents will die and then what are you going to do? I mean, it's a real concern. I'm all for family living but eventually your parents die and you have to step into their role for the next generation.

purpleplatapi

Well I don't want to actively perpetuate the issue, I just don't know that there is a solution. I mean seriously, we could pay everyone in the conservation area a princely sum (and if I was king for a day I would). But it's all paid for by taxes and charity donations. There isn't a way to fix this without like, overhauling the entire system of government.

I donate to a Malaria charity. I don't want their employees to be homeless, but I'm not donating to fund their lives, I'm trying to save the lives of Malaria patients. Every dollar more an hour that employee makes is one less life saved. It's a real catch 22. Every dollar more of tax money an employee is paid is a dollar out of a citizens pocket, and I'm happy to do it, but yeah this is the tradeoff.

I'm not convinced there is a solution, which is why I suggested better paying environmental options, because I came to the same conclusion you did. There's no money in conservation, just like there isn't in malaria prevention. And yes, because it's a class issue, it's also a race issue. I would never deny that. But I guess I want the maximum amount of good to come out of my tax dollars and my charitable contributions, and it's like that's a barely livable wage for the employee and then the absolute maximum amount of Malaria nets.

The other thing, the neruordivergence of it all, that's a problem with public facing jobs. I wish I had a solution for that too, that wasn't a more tolerant public, but most of the neruordivergent environmental kids I know opted out of zoos and museums and went for lab work and environmental engineering and stack testing specifically so they didn't have to interact with the public.

What good did we achieve during world war one??? No seriously, what was the point?? What were we working together towards??? And yeah I meant that humanity wasn't working together in world war 2, as evidenced by the fucking genocide. If we were all working together there wouldn't have been the Holocaust. I guess you seem to think that working together involves exclusively America and no other countries for some reason, or else you'd have to acknowledge that two world wars are not evidence of working together. The world was at war. It's in the fucking name.

Obviously I meant human climate change, which we've only known about since the 1970s. What a nonsensical argument. And by fix climate change, I was using shorthand for remidate the worst effects, which we are fully capable of doing, the world is not warming as fast as it could be. Additionally, I believe that we can be carbon neutral fairly quickly if we get our asses in gear, within the next 100 years. So then the climate is a little worse for the wear, but not catastrophically so.

And you really really really don't know how water works or else you wouldn't be praising reservoirs. Reservoirs are why they grow crops in places they aren't meant to be grown and waste all of that water. Without reservoirs, no one would live in Nevada, which is a good thing, we aren't meant to live in Nevada! But in all seriousness, you can't evenly distribute water, that's not how it works. If you live in a desert, you have to move to the places where the water is. I'm sorry, that's just how that works. You can move to a coast and get really into desalinization if you want, but you can't live in the places where water isn't naturally and then complain that humans were better in the 1960s.

purpleplatapi

Well yeah that's how non profits in general work. When all of the money goes to the actual environmental work, the employees themselves aren't well paid. So sure, it definitely favors people who are from privileged backgrounds. The only way to fix that is to take away the money from the charity work in order to pay the employees better. But then less charity work gets done. It's an age old complaint, we aren't going to hash it out in this thread.

But I take issue with the nursing thing, because it's just a way of perpetuating stereotypes about women. This field is becoming the next nursing is Internet shorthand for "this field has too many women and I think they're mean and gossipy because I spend too much time on Reddit". I'm convinced no one who says this knows nurses in real life.

Look, I want to save the animals as much as I'm sure you do, but not having money I started out as a stack tester and then went to drinking water. There are other options that pay better if that's the issue.

purpleplatapi

That seems awfully sexist.

You're not wrong that this field is significantly easier if you have money, but that's only if you're pursuing certain career fields. The conservation ones, sure, but most environmental careers are trades adjacent and very accessible. And you're not wrong that it's a fairly white field.

But seriously look at what you've written. They're all shallow, and pretty, and catty, and get by on their looks and husbands income?? I mean Jesus Christ. Your comparison is nursing, a field predominantly dominated by women, and allegedly all of those women have the same issues. I think you just might not like women very much, might think they take it less seriously somehow because they wear makeup or whatever. You call them Instagram models later on. Like are these real people who have actually specifically bullied you or just people you're vaguely mad and making up stories about.

purpleplatapi

100 years ago we did not used to work together for the greater good. 100 years ago was World War 1, then the Great Depression, and then shortly afterwards World War 2. And most of Europe retained all of their colonies and America was segregated. We have never worked together. You're wishing for a past that has never existed, and using that to fear monger about a future that might look very different from how you fear. Humans have solved every other problem they've encountered. I have to believe we'll solve this as well. (This being climate change primarily). I mean we went from the Industrial revolution to now within 200 years. It's almost exactly 200 years ago that it started, and we only found out about climate change 50 years ago. That's not even a full human lifetime. You can read that in two ways, either we'll get over this hump too, because every human ever has been a little bit convinced they were living through the end times. And they were always wrong. Or I guess you can decide that humanity has been damned by essentially 4 human lifetimes. That it took 4 human lifetimes to build everything we have, and we're at the absolute pinnacle. I don't know which way it will go. No one does. Anyone who tells you that they do is trying to sell you something. But I choose to believe it's the first.

purpleplatapi

No risk of pregnancy. Easier to get each other off. With a woman, if she wants an orgasm, it's easier to just do it herself than take a risk on a stranger who probably won't do the job in the first encounter and also might get her pregnant (I know birth control etc etc but still, it's not completely without risk). Easier to wait and get to know a person to see if you think they're a good/considerate person.
