I used to work in an adjacent space (VoIP) and the company I worked at also sells video products. The way to do real time video well on mobile is to write a native wrapper around WebRTC that your application logic can call into. For an app like this, I would suggest leveraging SDKs from API vendors like Tokbox or Twilio instead of trying to build your own video infrastructure. This will allow you to get off the ground quickly with a reasonable end-user experience. The main drawback is of course the cost, but you don't have enough users for it to matter at this point. Once you have a critical mass of users where it starts to matter, you'll likely have funding either from your users or investors to hire specialists that can build this for you. Hope this helps. PM me if you need more information.

I agree - Asian-Americans should go into medicine to start their own practice, or start their own business. Getting a CS degree pigeonholes Asians into the "robot worker" category and unless you're really careful with your career choices, you end up hitting the mid-career ceiling. For young Asian CS grads, I'd advise getting into consulting or starting your own startup as soon as possible - don't get lured into a false sense of security by working too long in big tech.

I don't usually comment on reddit, but just wanted to say that you're not alone. I've been stuck at a Senior Engineer position for the last 3 years. From my experience, this is far from unique (I'm Indian), and a large majority of my Indian peer group are also stuck in similar positions.

I work at a mid-size tech company in SV, and our leadership is majority white. Promotions are given based on who you know, so it benefits whites who schmooze with the leadership outside of work. From my interactions with many white people in tech, there seems to be an attitude of technological "manifest destiny" - that it is natural for whites to lead and lord over teams of mostly Asian people who are the actual implementors.

What's amazing is I see all these white people complain on blind about Indian managers being "racist" or "nepotistic" or whatever, but it's the exact opposite in my experience. Whites promote whites almost exclusively, and Indian managers are usually desperate to kiss ass and show their impartiality, so they end up promoting whites as well.

Agreed. Women have the same "burden of proof" placed on them in the workplace (specially STEM fields). It's male privilege which I fully admit to having, and I try my best to correct it whenever I can. I didn't mean to imply that your were racist. Just ranting I guess. Have a good night!

Please understand that I'm not trying to pick on you. I honestly couldn't care less if every white girl in the world thinks I'm unattractive. What upsets me is that these stereotypes and the burden of "proving" yourself spills over into every aspect of a minority individual's life. When you constantly hear things like "Oh, you're a good driver for an Asian woman" or "You're one of the few passionate Indian programmers I've seen" shit gets old real fast.

pyjug

Thats's exactly the point. I asked you what your preconceived notions were of white men purely based on race, and you couldn't name a single one. When you thought of white men, you thought of businessman, bros, lawyers etc. Why can't you think about Indian men the same way? Maybe next time you look at an Indian man, try and get past his skin color and notice what clothes his wearing.

pyjug

If you want to succeed with white women you have to show them you're different than those "defaults" in their head

You're contradicting yourself. So what are the "defaults" in your head about white men, purely based on race? And what does a white man have to do to prove that he's different from those defaults?

pyjug

I don't know why people are downvoting an honest answer. A lot of white people are scared that their children will not have the white privilege they themselves have, so they avoid marrying other races.

pyjug

Only sane response in this thread. Women don't like self-loathing white guys, let alone self-loathing Indian guys.

pyjug

Why should someone constantly have to prove that they're different from the stereotypes you have in your head? Do you automatically assume that every black man is going to steal your purse, or that he likes fried chicken? I'm not demanding that you be attracted to Indian men (your choice, of course), but please stop putting the burden on minorities for once, and start examining your own prejudices.

pyjug

Why are you so focused on white women? There are plenty of fit, attractive Hispanic, Indian, Asian and black women out there. As others have pointed out, white women are the least likely to date out of their race, period.

In my experience, other minorities are more likely to empathize with your life experiences and a better fit in general.

I'm light skinned as well, but South Indian. What's this aryan nonsense?

pyjug

It's a private business. As long as they aren't discriminating on the basis of race, religion, caste etc (basically things you're born with), it's totally legit.

pyjug

Exactly, OP comes across as wanting to get rid of this "problem"

Can anyone with Go production experience comment on the operational ecosystem around Go? IMO, a major advantage of running JVM applications in production is the mature tooling around deployment, monitoring and logging. You can instrument and monitor virtually everything the JVM is doing, unlike for example CPython. Of course, Go isn't a managed language, so I'm curious to know what kind of tooling the community has developed to address these concerns?

pyjug

Yep, and there's nothing wrong with that. My point is that a lot of these startups make a big deal about how they're pioneers of the field whereas in reality they're standing on the shoulders of giants just like most everyone else.

Stupid is as stupid does

I agree that South Asians have a stake in immigration reform, but I'd say it's okay to take a backseat to undocumented immigrant issues simply because they're more pressing. I say that because the vast majority of South/Central Asian immigration to the US is high skill labor.

The superficial startup ideas, the digital smugness, and the unnatural culture of tech celebrity are sometimes enough to make you want to throw your smartphone into the ocean and dive in after it

This is so true. It's everywhere. I'm sick of people talking about hacker news "celebrities" or the latest round of funding some no name startup got. I'm tired of sales/marketing/hr jocks talk like they build distributed systems for breakfast.

Anyhow, this seems like a nice little initiative. I only see workshops for IoS/android. Is there anything in the piipeline for non mobile developers?

Although I understand where OP's coming from, his/her argument is a strawman. Testers are goalkeepers of bugs because they are the last line of defense. This doesn't mean that midfielders or defenders are absolved of the responsibility of stopping goals.

pyjug

You'd be surprised how many "cloud startups" are nothing but a patchwork of open source software held together with python glue

pyjug

Gosh! When did I ever make that assertion? I was just asking an innocent question. Anyway, you and I are in agreement. These cheaters must be kicked out; the "cultural deviants" are probably okay, though. They must have learned the great ways of the White Man somehow.

pyjug

Ah, those fucking deviants. Why are there so many of them?

1 2 3 4 5 6

pyjug

What? White people cheat? Blasphemy!
