These officials you want to act independent of the political system. You do not want to set precedent that they will receive punishment for making the wrong call, otherwise politics will dictate their decision and they are no longer independent actors but extensions of the ruling political party. As a libertarian, this should terrify you even more, as it’s further consolidation of political power to the ruling party.

You can’t judge a decision from hindsight. Decisions can only be made with the information available at the time the decisions must be made. Unless you can show that someone was negligent, this is a fallacious argument.

The slippery slope here is that everyone should be fired when they do anything that doesn’t work. You should end your friendships when your friends accidentally upset you. You should punish your children when they make an honest, childish mistake.

The logic is wrong. The taxpayer doesn’t subsidize any part of that $1M, it’s treated like the person donating never earned that money as part of their income. People aren’t taxed on what they don’t earn. And the person donating didn’t get to keep 400k of that $1M. The logic is just totally flawed.
