The weird thing with short barrels is most of the criminals who used them wouldn’t even obey the law. The vast majority of guns that fell under that ruling were these cool over under shotguns / small caliber rifles people used for small game, trapping and self defense. I’ve seen an example of one in a museum and the idea was that it could fit in a small bag, large coat pocket or be carried one handed

Which was also stupid because at the time many people in rural areas carried short barrel combinations shotguns and small caliber rifle rounds for hunting and self defense. I’ve seen a few examples in museums with one gun shops records showing they’d sold so many of them the owner believed almost the entire town owned one. It also lead to a lot of people in remote areas not knowing that owning it was a felony and being arrested during hunting season or having what was often their only firearm taken by law enforcement

Actually it was because police had been ordered to harass black people so they would move. New York did something similar. Worth noting plenty of officers did refuse and faced mandatory transfers, loss of pensions, etc and a lot of officers thought they were alone and took the transfers or moved patrol but didn’t speak out. The black panthers started self policing the neighborhoods and walking around opening carrying so police wouldn’t be as willing to harass them. Thats when the California gun ban came about. Basically every gun law we have is because politicians didn’t want minorities armed.
