This is called "expected value", which is a super basic statistics concept.

If there are two teams that each have an equal chance of winning a game, they each have a 50% chance. That adds up to 100%, because there will be one winner. 1=100%

If there are four teams that all have an equal chance of making a 2-team playoff, they each have a 50% chance. 4x50% adds up to 200%. 200% = 2. Two teams will make the playoff. Expected # of playoff teams = 2.

What if two of the teams are a lot better than the other two? Maybe they each have a 75% chance to make the playoff. In that case, the other two teams would have a 25% chance to make the playoff. The aggregate probability still adds up to the expected value of # of teams in the playoff.

Would it make any sense at all for those probabilities to add up to anything other than 200%? Would it make sense for all 4 teams to have only a 10% chance of making the playoff? No. Would it make any sense for all 4 to have a 90% chance of making the playoff? No.

I've been following politics for 40 years now. Every time gas prices went up, the president got blamed. Every time gas prices went down, the president took credit.

Pretty much all of those times, it just wasn't so. There were global economic factors far beyond the president's immediate reach in play.

But this time is different. There's a direct line of sight between starting the war with Iran, the Strait of Hormuz closing, and gas prices. Here's some data on gas prices. And here's some on the number of ships passing through the Strait.

The war with Iran started on Feb 28, after which tanker traffic plummets and gas prices skyrocket.

So just a dickhead.
