I actually really like that the story itself is challenging the ethics of such a system especially since seven havens seems to be targeted towards a young audience again. It is interesting how common that type of organisation is in fiction, and not often questioned, at least not in the core story.

Like, its basically how the Jedi Council works in Star Wars (pre-empire at least) and its similar to how some ninja villages operate in Naruto.

I also like that it is an understandable (and as you have identified, historically true) organisation - a society with the founding ideal "we need to do whatever we have to to survive" is gonna do questionable things - but still ultimately evil in how it forces individuals to risk their lives, fight and die.

Seems like they are talking about the fomer issue.

https://greens.org.au/nsw/news/media-release/destruction-nature-transmission-infrastructure-proves-biodiversity-offsets

It also looks like they are taking part in environmental protest. Heres Larissa Waters helping to shut down a coal port.

https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1Bq4gWxqyr/

They are even still campaigning on "saving the whales." Here is a media release from last year about their bill to protect the calving sanctuary of the Southern Wright Whale from coal and gas mining.

They alo absolutely used to talk about other issues. Here is Bob Brown on queer rights in 2006.

https://www.thepinknews.com/2006/04/04/gay-senator-backs-gay-marriage-for-australians/

Heres him in 2005 calling for accepting refugees

Here he is in 2003 opposing war in Iraq.

In what period did the Greens only focus on the environment?

Yeah, my city has had Twisted, Trail to Oregon, Firebringer and Guy who didn't like musicals in the past couple years, all put on by different community groups.

As another vegan I agree completely. Baby steps are not enough, but it is better than nothing. It seems like a lot of people are looking for an excuse to not be vegan, rather than actually working towards it though.

For example the (imo) one valid reason to not be 100% vegan is health reasons. There are some people who have a wide range of allergies, or something like ARFID. But I know people who have those conditions who still limit meat as much as medically possible, and are constantly looking for safe vegan foods, because they do actually care. If they can do that, someone without medical dietary constraints can cut out animal products.

Tbh he was always the worst actor of the cast anyway. Anytime they did a "recast the cast as different characters to tell another story in the world" episode, his character was always basically just Nate but sometimes a bit meaner.

There's also a difference between an early boot returning at final 6 due to EoE, and a standard player. If Chris/Natalie don't put themselves in fire, what have they really done except win 2 challenges?

rindlesswatermelon

Also it makes it easier to say "dont vote for republicans, they're fascist ideologues who cabt habdle public services," when there are actually public services that governments are expected to run.

rindlesswatermelon

that would have been their goal.

Theres no chance that the party, with member directed policy, might just hold a stance because they believe in it? And have held that stance even when it didnt get them attention.

This memo is from 2015. They have the exact same Palestine policy now as they did then.

rindlesswatermelon

Well Charlie theres a specofic reason why YOU cant

rindlesswatermelon

Yeah, if pride parades and Mardi Gras were really progressive they would invite people like Thomas Sewell and Cardinal Pell.

Also missing the whole point of the poster.

That poster depicts Monga Khan. Khan came to the colony of Victoria in 1895 (Australia had not yet federated). Idk about the rest of you, but I have heaps of family members that came over more recently than that.

/uj and also I personally think its kinda transphobic to coddle trans men more than other men from these types of comments. There are plenty of groups of cis men that are feminised in our society (e.g. asian men, disabled men, gay men, hell even male nurses, child care workers or stay at home dads) but in general people don't rush in to say "actually not all men experience make privilege" about these groups when men get criticised at large.

The fact that they don’t work to change that makes me think they’re at best wreckers or at worst nefarious agents. I think they’re in a symbiotic relationship with big meat

I'm sorry but this argument to me seems super similar to "DSA/Woke/Leftists on Twitter are responsible for Trumps election."

Yes, peta do occasionally (more occasionally than most people say) have a campaign that is poorly thought out and is ableist or sexist or problematic in some other way. Saying that though, much if their "abraisiveness" is them just being correct and people being uncomfortable with that.

Like, when Peta is "abraisive" because they show people slaughterhouse footage, is that not the same from a praxis perspective than showing footage of what is happening in Gaza.

Or when they compare the mechanical gassing to death of animals as part of factory farming to the holocaust they get criticised by the ADL, but again we have seen criticism of groups linking Gaza to the holocaust also by the ADL.

It seems more to me that their worldview is flawed and they don't see animal exploitation in a way that is in my view truly intersectional. But not everyone who is annoying is a corporate puppet, or like 99% of Tumblr users are corporate puppets designed to make the left look bad

rindlesswatermelon

Not the person you asked but I am also a teacher.

I think that stance is a partial truth, but not useful in addressing the full scope of the problem, and not empathetic to how hard parents have it atm.

Fundamentally our economic system has focused so much on funneling wealth the the rich that we have gone from a situation where households could be supported on a single income, to supported on 2 incomes, to can't even be properly supported on 2 incomes. (To be clear it is good that women won access into the workforce. What is a problem is that the expectation now is that both parents work full time rather than they take turns working 1 FTE.)

I do think many parents don't engage with their kids in a way that is conducive to positive education outcomes, but it's not because parents are stupid or lazy, they just don't have time or energy to do so after running themselves ragged trying to keep a roof over their heads and food in their kids bellies. In addition, you don't as much have the fantastic community building that is school pickup anymore - instead of all the mums (once again bad that it was exclusively always the mums) getting to discuss their kids and parenting strategies at the school gate - building communal knowledge, you have parents coming to grab their kids whenever they can, often from some type of after school care, and chronologically isolated from other parents.

So yeah, instead of being read to, and played with, kids are being given devices and forced to fend for themselves while their increasingly isolated and overwork parents rest. That won't be fixed just by telling the parents to be better, it is actually a problem at the societal level.

This is one of those political statements that noone can really disagree with because everyone has a different definition of all the terms.

Is it purity politics refusing to engage with openly awful hostile people on the rare case they have a good take on foreign policy (MTG on Iran)

Is purity politics refusing to engage with people whose actions are pro-genocide but are less pro-genocide than the alternative (e.g. Biden, Harris).

Is it purity politics to refuse to support bigoted violent insurrections when they oppose another greater evil (Hamas, Houthis, Azov in Ukraine).

The difference in politics on the left isn't between people who want to "get stuff done" and "make the Coalition as bug as possible" vs people who don't want that. Everyone is trying to get as much real change done as possible, with the largest coalition possible, but with everyone having different standards for what counts as real positive change, and who is worth working alongside vs ignoring vs actively fighting.

(To be clear I am not specifically supporting or condemning any of the examples. The point was to create a list of people that I have seen some self describe leftists praising or attempting to ally with and others rejecting them).

Tl:Dr if you don't ally with both Tankies AND moderate Republicans you are engaging in purity politics.

Literally my psych to me.

Turns out bottling emotions in so well that you never feel angry is not a sign you are enlightened and instead a sign that you are deeply unhealthy.

Conservative class analysis.

Careers that are working class: trades, fossil fuel mining, military (any rank), multimillion dollar racist podcaster, CEO of Tesla.

Careers that are not working class: barista, school teacher, unemployed, disability support worker, my bitch ex-wife.

Given where the US currently is, and where it's headed, I think it's worth discussing how we ended up here.

It's worth discussing how part of Biden's pitch to the party in 2020 is that he will be a 1 term president intentionally.

It is worth discussing how after a terms where he was clearly getting too old, he backfilled and decided to run again.

It is worth discussing how the Democratic party closed ranks and attacked those who were concerned about Biden running again and tried to challenge him in the primary or voted unaligned.

It is worth discussing how after the first debate the media went from "don't criticise him, he's the candidate" to "we need to get rid of him asap" overnight. (cough Jake Tapper)

It is worth discussing how that flip only really happened when wealthy Democratic donors changed their minds.

It is worth discussing how Harris ended up as the candidate not through a Democratic process or a strong personal brand, but for convenient campaign finance reasons.

A lesson that many moderate Republicans failed to learn in 2016 was that Trump isn't the source of rot in their party, but a symptom of it. They assumed as soon as he lost an election he would be hone for good, and they could move on. It is worth examining how the rot in the Democratic party led us back here again. How do we avoid another 2016 and another 2024.

If we only look at what Trump's actions, and not the democrats (in)actions, we create the environment that will allow the next Trump to rise (or indeed, for this one to stay forever)

And a bunch of people complaining "I have 1 good game, and then I end up with really sweaty people forever, as though without SBMM, they would be anything stopping good players from joining their lobby.

rindlesswatermelon

Let me repeat the key part of the article

but both described it as worse than that directed at any other MP in their time in parliament. Haines was elected in 2019 and Landry in 2013, after a vitriolic term in which Julia Gillard gave her famous misogyny speech accusing the Coalition of repeated sexism directed at her in parliament."

I'm not pretending that max was this peaceful kind presence that Albo was being mean to for no reason, but I think it says something that 2 women who were in parliaments run by a series of awful vitriolic coalition leaders say that the actions of the Labor party to max was the worst behaviour they have ever seen (including implicitly Max's treatment of Albol

Why aren't Labor that disrespectful to Coalition figures? Or Pauline Hanson? Or Palmer when he was in there? Or the Greens in the Senate who are materially doing more to actually block Max?

I think it is fair for Max to feel especially mistreated, even if he was no angel himself.

Edited to add: also I don't understand your clip. In it, Max is mad that the Prime Minister misquoted him, in order to paint him as a liar.

rindlesswatermelon

Maybe it's because trump is extra-judicially deporting pro-palestinean activists and people are fucking afraid?

rindlesswatermelon

Don't get me wrong, police in the US are worse than police in Europe and elsewhere, but that doesn't mean other police are good.

Part of a job of a cop in a capitalist nation is to break up strikes, protests, and other demonstrations that threaten the state. Look at France any time they have a (reasonable) general strike against ghoulish policy and are met with police violence. Or in Germany where police are violently arresting and jailing Jewish people for speaking out against Israel.

Also, just because the racialised violence is less visible in societies with fewer racial minorities (and fewer guns), does not mean that the police aren't racist.

rindlesswatermelon

would you say that a person who was tricked into believing the system they serve is good is evil, if they've never interacted with the evil parts of the system?

So Nazis bear no culpability where they were "only following orders."

farmer in 1984 evil because he works for his authoritarian government? He is serving his evil government yet has no interaction with the bad parts of the regime he serves.

If the farmer regularly committed violence on behalf of the state and/or ran cover for others who commit violence on behalf of the state like cops do, then yes.

rindlesswatermelon

If you say "all racists are bad" aren't you also saying all people of those group are automatically bad." Do you really think that disliking all racists is identical to racism? Or can you understand the difference between disliking groups based on shared innate traits, and disliking groups based on shared behaviour choices?

Part of ACAB is that the good cops (cops that stand up to the "bad apples") are eventially either fired (becoming not cops) or learn to hold their tongue (becoming not good). Even if they 1% do want badly to reform policing, they are currently perpetuating policing as it exists now.

So top surgery scars are an issue because there is magic but BG3 lets you have other scars and that's fine because...?

The weirdest thing is that the top surgery scars are as "in your face" as the ability to select any genitals with any body type in BG3. Loke I genuinely do no see how the former is woke and forcing trans ideology and the latter isn't besides "bad game is woke and good game isn't"
