Probably that I actually made it and how hard I had to work to get here.

Brother, this same exact thing happens every 4 or 5 years. When I graduated high school in 2007 it was pharmacy, when my sister graduated 4 years earlier it was biotech, in 2018-2022 it was STEM, and for the past few years its been trades. Our government doesn't actually have a system that works for accurately preparing workers for future demand by employers.

Getting a job has never been more difficult than figuring out what most people don't want to do and doing it. For example, they need a lot of people on-site/hybrid for jobs in Alaska so its one of the few markets in the states where employers are willing offer relocation packages right now. You just need to live there long enough to weather out the current economic storm.

What I don't understand is why people don't believe everything they see on TV but do for Internet videos.

Its by no means flawless. The only people who think AI is exceptionally talented are people who don't know as much about the subject as they think they do. If you've got 10-15+ years of experience doing something you know damn well how much coaching and trial and error it takes to get LLMs to output something acceptable. Who its replacing are the folks who're early into their careers, and with regards to SWE's specifically its the ones who used exclusively rely on tutorials and code examples from forums/stackoverflow.

It does instantly make your company more appealing to investors though who are the ones who need to put up the cash. Investors don't aren't going to put up money if their spend on employees or anything else is out of control.

Did you know there's a sponge in your printer that constantly pulls ink out of the cartridge? They probably need to do this because it keeps the head from drying and clogging, but literally each day you're not printing something you are losing money. Get a laser printer instead.

Originally Steve Jobs didn't want an app store but instead wanted people/companies to create web apps that could just be run in the browser, and he kind of got his way in the end because browser apps are inherently cross-platform. Though I think where the Internet really died is more around the time living online became mainstream. Because apparently for people who aren't on the spectrum its easier to accept activities that do not change or push boundaries but remain the same. Normies are totally cool with there basically being 10 sites on what they consider the Internet to be.
What I find interesting is that basically every Internet-based company doesn't start by appealing to neurotypicals. They build their companies on the backs of outcasts and once they hit mainstream approval they always shove the original audience out the door. What sucks about that now is the deck is stacked against anyone who wants to build a website or community online. We've very much enshrined the big box web applications that currently exist in stone.

Buyouts are also commonly preformed when companies want to force expensive employees into an early retirement so they can be replaced with fresher, cheaper blood.

I think its massive leap to say the 60k people affected by this layoff are all or a majority are software engineers. Most of what goes into making products successful has very little to do with software engineering other than it being a task that needs doing. Microsoft is also a very big organization with its hands in many different verticals. Console gaming for one is looking increasingly like a total loss for the company.

They might plan on it but probabilistic systems are notorious for getting 80% of the way there like nothing but near impossible to close the final 20%. Lots of the progress for the past 2-3 years has been on the side of engineering state into LLMs via agent clients. They haven't really scaled LLM performance the way they did between 2020 and mid 2023. Its somewhat unrealistic that they'll be able to close the gap completely.
I think the types of software engineers who relied on tutorials, stackoverflow, etc. and couldn't program their own solutions unless ones were already provided that they could adapt are on borrowed time, but engineers with with first principle thinking? Absolutely not. I think because publicly traded companies have to post quarterly results they're incentivized to think in the short-term, so they do not really care if they're shooting themselves in the foot in 5 years. Because 5 years is a long time and many leaders will simply leave before that's a short-term problem to solve.

Of course some of them knew or at least gossiped about the possibility. You cannot hide something like this from every single person if the two of them are around them every day. They may have not known known but they definitely weren’t totally caught off guard either. If you’ve spend a decade or two in an office you know damn well every is an open secret.

You know the Internet is just a place you visit. You can just turn your phone or laptop off and be in the only real world that actually exists.
rkozik89
Wouldn’t change a thing, the sooner you quit tutorials, copying code, and start comparing solutions you dreamed up on your own to industry standard answers the sooner you will develop real problem solving ability. It’s easy to replace software engineers that rely on documentation and code examples, but it a hell of a lot harder to replace engineers who can solve the problems copy-paste coders can’t. That’s literally by definition something LLMs are not likely to do without suggesting hacks that have major caveats.

Having a web presence for your restaurant. It used to require you to build a website, but nowadays you can just list your business on the relevant apps and you are good to go. A website is actually a burden because legally if your online menu lists price it must match the menus you have in the restaurant.

I’m bipolar, I experience multiple sides regularly and have learned to never trust how I feel because I know eventually I won’t feel that way in the future, but at the same time I do not feel a heightened sense of self awareness is actually useful because it makes getting anything done very difficult. You need some self awareness but not so much that you can’t commit to anything.

Yeah bro, at this time no one is Eastern Europe was considered white and neither were the Balkans or Italy. White was quite literally the UK, Germany, France and that’s about it.

Don’t put too much weight in ethnicity estimates. The professors who created that field of study say they generally only accurate on a continental level. Also, there are anomalies where isolated populations get results for region/continents they have no connection to because they weren’t impacted by mass migration events the ways others in their region were. See Sardinians, Canary Islanders, or Basques for example. If eliminated those data points it’s not common for the next closest ethnicity to be North African. Because Berbers genetically are more similar to them than Europeans.

I like how we’ve accepted this as if it’s normal but it really isn’t. The Miloganite plant is basically just landfill with extra steps. It doesn’t make sense for it to be zoned within city limits.

So only when it happens to the Jewish people and never when they or anyone does it to another group?
