Respectfully, I don't really agree with this. You're absolutely right to be polite, but if you frame this as "what can I do to get promoted", they'll just list a bunch of stuff snd forget about it.

Most managers are nice enough, but they really just want to get through their day. If they aren't already batting for you, they aren't going to put any extra effort into helping you just because you floated the idea.

You need to tell them what you want, and leave it with them as an action they can actually do. "I was really hoping for a bigger salary increase this year, as I now have 3 years experience and ive done x,y and z to improve. Can you raise this with me?" If the only way to increase salary is promotion, then I would say "when can I next be put forward for promotion, and what do I have to prove by then to be get it?"

They aren't going to label you a flight risk, it actually sounds like you are more interested in staying at the company. And they would have to be phenomenally stupid to think they can keep paying you inflationary pay rises forever...

Not really sure why all these comments here are suggesting you dont bother. Definitely ask for more, especially if you're expecting only inflationary. Yeh there's a good chance they say no, but there's no harm in asking.

Going from 2 to 3 years or experience is a big step up. I wouldnt frame it around what your outgoings are, thats not important. I would do a bit of research for similar roles, and say something like "I've gone from 2 years to 3 years experience. My salary was ok last year but now its no longer competitive because I can see lots of 3 year positions offering x. Can we look at getting an increase that reflects my experience now". Don't tell them some bullshit high salary, look for something you genuinely think you could get.

The best time to do this is immediately after the pay rise is announced to you. Once it's in the system no one will want to bother changing it, but lots of companies have a window before it gets locked in by HR.

And yeh, after all this, be prepared to look elsewhere anyway. The job market is tougher right now for software, but there are jobs out there that pay more than yours.

robolew

Yeh you can expect more than 40k at 3 YoE in London. I was at 60k with 2, back in 2019 (obviously a different time, but salaries havent dropped over the last 6 years)

I'm confused what conclusion to draw from this. If this is true, there's really only two ways this makes sense:

  1. Germans in the 40s were on average much more evil people than the rest of the world, for some reason. I have no idea what could cause this, but it would mean that if a fascist regime got into power somewhere else, people would resist interning people into concentration camps, because they are better people that 40s Germans.

  2. Most people across the world are like this, and would go along with the atrocities if they happened, even if they knew about this. If the same regime got into power somewhere else, you could expect the people to behave the same way

I guess I hope that the answer is 1, but I dont know if there's any particular reason its more likely to be true...

robolew

I'm not arguing, I asked a question and had a followup discussion. No need to be condescending.

robolew

I asked a question because this is a subreddit entirely unrelated to sport cycling, I assumed you didn't need to have prerequisite knowledge.

I wasn't trying to insult the sport or something, I'm genuinely confused why this is considered a good addition to it

robolew

I understand the idea, I'm just struggling to get why people are accepting that this is the best way to handle this.

Goalies don't pick up the ball and run because the rules state they can't grab the ball outside the box or hold onto it longer than 8 seconds.

If there's a similar rule here then I guess it makes sense, but it looks like this is born out of a technicality, not because it makes the sport better

robolew

He would still be participating with an assisted bike, no different from what you said, it just wouldn't be from a vibe based rule: "youre allowed to be mechanically assisted by a car but only for an unspecified amount of time and only if you are sort of near the back and agree to not come first in your team"

robolew

Then why not just give him an ebike and say he doesnt actually place, hes just a helper?

robolew

Damn cancer preventing slop! Taking jobs away from real oncologists!

robolew

What do you mean by "built different"? Do they actually have some biological advantage that makes them better, or could it be a result of other things behind the scenes, like their parents were into classical music so they were interested from a young age for example?

robolew

But one of those "friends" is her own brother?

robolew

But that is part of the game's philosophy. I think they really wanted that feeling that you've played the game a bunch of times before and you can still discover something new. It rewards you going back through areas, and the obfuscation of how NPCs behave makes them feel more like people you are interacting with on their journey,  and less like a checklist.

I understand why people might not like that, but i would hate for them to remove that. There's more than enough games that just give you a quest marker and a log, and say "go here to do the next part of this quest", how dark souls handles NPCs is really unique

robolew

This looks like a shooting based warband literally designed the whole map. Its a big grid with massive empty streets. My Nuln gunners would have a field day!

When you're placing terrain, deliberately ruin all the straight lines that the other player(s) are making. Put random barriers across the street, make a route from one side to the other that can always give you cover.

Don't let them build a big empty killing field they can aim down for the whole game

robolew

I think the issue is that having him no-prep these things actually devalues the achievement of doing them. Getting a perfect score in pacman isn't like turning up to a 100m track and beating the world record. That could be done if you stretch your belief enough to say "oh he's really fast, even though hes barely trained, he's just a fast runner".

It would be more like reciting the entire King James bible... without having read it before. Just sort of guessing the next words because you're that good at reading. It doesn't feel like a skill it just feels like magic

robolew

You're just conflating the meanings of the word force though. When people talk about a cosmic force, they mean something acting with intention upon the universe.

You're talking here about an "expanding force", like the force pushing out a balloon, so one of 4 fundamental physical forces that exist in nature. (Expansion of the universe also isnt caused by any of these physical forces).

The big bang can't be a cosmic force like "God" because it isnt deliberately doing anything. If you're saying that physics happening is the same as a God, then that would just make the idea of God meaningless, because its just defined identically to something else

Being Keanu Reeves

Two recent action movies I though were punching above their weight were:

  • 60 minutes, about a kickboxer who leaves a fixed match halfway through to get to his daughters birthday party. I love movies that take place over a small amount of time, the action was great and it gives a surprising amount of depth to the main character. Its German, as a heads up

  • Rebel Ridge, a man trying to bail out his brother, who gets on the wrong side of some cops. Also surprisingly  deep and a great performance form the MC. And very cathartic action

Thanks, youve just given me the name of my next dnd campaign's main tavern

It's a cash grab because the end result isn't "you cant play this song on the radio anymore", it's "now you have to give us some of the money".

It's literally a cash grab... there is no way this has caused them any monetary or reputational damage, people aren't deliberately playing Olivia Dean's song instead of Bill Withers

robolew

Pretty sure based on their last update the improvements to crucible are free, its only the 4 maps that are tied to the DLC

robolew

90% sure it is. At the end of the last update they said "The Crucible is set to receive a mammoth update alongside the Raiders of the North release" and then talk about the multiplayer.

I think only the 4 new maps are locked behind the dlc, and everything else including multiplayer is just a free update.

robolew

Pretty sure coop mode is coming with the free update. Its the extra crucible maps that come with the dlc.

Which is a good decision, having coop will persuade more people to buy the DLC

robolew

That word is defined in every major dictionary, what are you talking about?
