As if speed improvements haven't happened in fiber tech.

Just to surface some replies, I think trying Linux in a virtual machine is your best option for starting out. There are plenty of online tutorials for installing Hyper-V or VirtualBox on Windows. As long as you have the drive space for it, you can have several installed (though you should only run one at a time for trying out). Once you find the one you like most you can consider installing it directly on the computer, obliterating Windows 11. And if you are concerned you might need Windows 11 for something after, you have enough experience with VMs that you might create a Windows VM in your chosen Linux.

Probably being pedantic, but would a VB6-style IDE mean Visual Studio 6? I don't recall there being a VB specific IDE.

Unrelated to the title, but...

Why is your employer jumping from non-LTS to non-LTS? (Not that 3 years should qualify as LONG term support IMHO.)

I can't even begin to comprehend the stupid reason that would lead to a Dictionary<> being used as the KEY to a containing Dictionary<>.

It's a box of tissue paper, so maybe the zombies just have a bad cold.

The joke is that it takes so long to compile everything in Gentoo. The "in your life" gets more literal in the final panel and that you'll die before it finishes compiling.

Thank you for reminding me I need to go pull a couple of wires out of my OnStar.

Even if you have a loan for a car, you own the car. The title is in your name. It's just collateral for the loan and the lender gets a lien. If the terms of the loan don't mandate a tracker until the loan is paid off... yoink!

Tar is like zip without any compression. It's just a collection of files. The more common variety is a .tar.gz or .tgz which is a tar file collection run through gzip compression. You may see other forms of "tarballs" using other compression algorithms as well such as .tar.bz2.

And you can park your fleet when you don't need them from your ships list so you don't have to pay the 100/crew/day price in between times you don't need them. If you unpark them while on another planet, they'll make their way to you. I've often unparked ships I need for a trip, launched, and then sat in orbit waiting for them to arrive. You only pay the salary once at launch because the salary gets paid when you jump, not when they do.

It'd be nice to get back to trucks that are both useful and don't hide a pedestrian standing right in front of them from view.

You're confusing prefix with area code. Area code is the first 3 digits in a 10 digit phone number, and prefix is the second 3 digits in a 10 digit, but the first 3 in a 7 digit.

I have done exactly that in the past to hide the filenames of the inner zip file. You need only password protect the outer zipped file.
