Fable 5.5 is just around the corner, form early testing I wouldn't panic

sdmat

Dario gave strong evidence this was the case in a later interview, explaining his very conservative approach for compute.

He has evidently seen that was a mistake as Anthropic has wildly corrected in the opposite direction.

sdmat

Don't get me wrong, eagerly waiting for my M5 Studio. But there's no way it replaces the subscriptions.

sdmat

Do you honestly think kimi k3 is better than Fable and Astra?

I don't know what to tell you if so, be happy with it I guess.

sdmat

The man has a market niche and caters to it. Gary Marcus without the good looks.

sdmat

For what, giving them more money?

sdmat

Because Fable has a different data retention policy to the other models and Anthropic has been very clear about that

sdmat

Anthropic engineer: It's fine if it's not perfectly precise, who cares about 0.1% of a usage budget?

sdmat

And Fable tokens are billed against quota at a much higher rate. Also restricted to 50% of the total.

sdmat

Yes, that's right.

If you want to resolve an ambiguity with anything Anthropic related just ask: what would a petty bureaucrat do?

sdmat

You actually deplete the weekly Fable limit in just 3 5 hour sessions if you only use Fable.

It's a taste to addict you, not a meal.

sdmat

I find it frustrating they don't make a good omnimodal model without these artificial restrictions. We know they can.

Power Word: Impoverish

Fast isn't even available for Fable yet, but for Opus it's 2.5x faster at 2x the cost per token. So 5x the hourly cost while using it.

Fast Fable would therefore be 10x the hourly cost of regular Opus, and regular opus can cost over $50/hr on credits with a few subagents in the mix. So $4K/day or >$800K/year.

Is that a lot of usage? Sure is, maybe you don't need all of that.

sdmat

If you have to ask the question, you can't afford API usage

sdmat

$300K/year does not buy you unlimited single user fast mode Fable via API.

$100K certainly covers their cost for that, not their obscene gross margins.

sdmat

Tell it it isn't German

sdmat

Point is it's very easy to switch, they are both rapidly improving. They frequently copy each other's features and it is straightforward to duplicate or work around anything.

sdmat

Codex is a fully featured coding agent like claude code, cowork is just a coding agent with the serial number filed off.

Success in life

sdmat

Isn't this the third 5.5 instant rollout?

sdmat

Think through the second order effects.

US AI currently soaks up the world's talent and capital, and those are critical in companies getting a competitive advantage to dominate global markets, gain revenue, and attract yet more talent and capital.

The US does not have magic AI-producing soil, cutting itself off harms the AI industry in the mid to long term. Unless you are entirely convinced of short term hard takeoff, this matters enormously.

Same applies for Chinese AI, but in reverse - the US making itself a supply chain threat forces everyone else to find alternatives. Currently China leads there. This means far more funding and strategic and political importance for Chinese AI firms. This is a terrible geopolitical outcome for the US.

And for what? What benefit does the US get from cutting off access to its allies? A short term feeling of superiority?

sdmat

Which is why they are fine with giving access to random civilians?
