I mean how much could one banana cost?

shoobe01

Fun but [Morbo] spear guns do not work that way. Yes, I've fired one on land.

shoobe01

I'm used to SH being Sniper Hide and always loved it because that's my initials also.

I will not accept this slander it can be for something un cool! 🫥

Good UX is the entire damn experience. If you exploit the users they will eventually notice and they will hold it against you. Then maybe you lose the customer. Maybe you lose them forever because they no longer trust you.

I have seen the results of making downgrades difficult result in more cancellations instead. By the time you have to call customer care or write a letter they'll just cancel their entire service instead of dealing with your evil company.

Try to understand the damage to brand reputation risk, even if ethics don't make any sense to you or your organization.

"You should look up Pete Rose"

😂

But simultaneously 😓

At least on the radio, you mean it's for HP (e).

I worked for HP not long after the break up and even I found this very confusing the first several times before I figured out they are trying to say that they are HPE aren't they? But either are very bad at saying letters out loud or are vaguely embarrassed and trying to not confuse everybody with the third letter?

I used Wacom for years, basically because for a while they were the only serious game in town. I miss Calcomp. Been using digitizer tablets for all my work which includes sometimes digital art and photo retouching and stuff like that, for 35 years now so I'm fairly picky about it.

Anyway, Wacom drivers became utterly useless and terrible so I ditched all of them about 18 months ago for a pair of Huion (on two different computers). I have a smallish Inspiroy, which leads me to believe the big ones (which should still be approximately in your budget) will be just fine also.

My big one is the Inspiroy Giano, basically to get the size but it has other features like wireless, which I don't use but add to the price. A little over your budget therefore, but probably a third to a quarter of the cost of an equivalent Wacom so you get a lot of tablet for the price.

Whoever did this needs to have their hands permanently locked into kevlar mittens so they cannot ever ever type anything ever again.

shoobe01

Asked and answered. Like 3 to 5 times a week this entire season.

Which is not just dismissive, but there are really really good answers that go into the details of real world operations in some of those answers. Search and read.

Mebruary.

Can or should be: Hard no.

Is: Sorta?

SEEMS, with the effort of getting to why execs and PMs demand things, that we need to squeeze in somewhere to type... oh! the search field!!!! And there's not obviously more thought than that.

I think the entire concept of conversational interfaces much less prompting is a tragedy for mass market products. We abandoned command line interfaces for a reason, GUIs are the mass-adoption model for a reason, and all that guides UX as a practice is founded on human behaviors. Now, we're dropping all transparency about what the system does, what an interaction will result in, etc. for "Ask me anything," which of course is itself a lie. Hiring bots cannot and should not do your shopping or your taxes or build an app or tell you about forestry practices in Indonesia. It's not ANYTHING so what is it?

(I ranted much more about this here if anyone cares: https://www.4ourthmobile.com/publications/best-and-worst-practices-in-ai-interaction-design)

-------

NOW... to your "Instead of selecting ten filters and hoping..." let's admit that is slanted as hell. Almost no one actually uses faceted search, and my experience is few use on-app search at all (deep links from outside search are something else), so your navigation and other controls better work.

"Conversation seems more useful" and other statements verge on your question sounding disingenuous; do you know how many people cannot put together a meaningful sentence? How many who normally naturally can freeze up when there's a blank page or input? How about the secret language to make the LLM do things, so your NL phrasing won't work, now you must learn the system language?

There's a LOT to it and the buzzwords (like NL) are dangerously unhelpful.

Mine did this on day one. It's a bad design with improper touch zones, it's apparently bad hardware if they have to recalibrate.

But I didn't even bother complaining because I tapped, something else was selected, so I tapped again until my selection was properly indicated.

As always, I checked the final confirmation screen, and then I checked the printed out a piece of paper before I put it in the scanner.

I did unfortunately forget the step where I have to declare a conspiracy theory and complain to the news.

You should delete this post before your COC finds it.

I wish I had all the videos of long ago phone testing, to get quotes, because I vaguely remember the "I just want a simple phone that..." being a very moving target over the years.

Started at 'just call and text.'

Then stuff started getting added. Get my weather and sports scores, take photos, give me driving directions... get on Facebook, etc.

But none of that other silly stuff or [new feature we're testing]. I just want a simple phone that does the basics.

shoobe01

If anything, I typically have given the mobile more capabilities. Think location, specific to where you are, probably all the time, vs generally your computer is hereabouts.

Intents instead of inbuilt features. The classic is a contact form; you will typically want to replace the desktop form with just an email intent instead.

Be aware of context. Some that people use phones all the time so old assumptions of sessions (implying focused use) are formally out the window. Make sure that everything from timeout to wayfinding supports interruption, and resume an arbitrary time later.

And also the on screen and device context. I like to have at least some design drawing time in a phone frame, but ALL your drawings need to include typical browser chrome, inputs need to show the OSK or pickerview, and do some checking with worst case chrome to check available space, and interference.

Interference has gotten worse the past several years. On screen Home buttons and popup chrome when you click the edges and so on, mean that things a lot do to emulate apps do not work. A bottom tab bar is (other issues of being a website to user expectation aside) can be from error prone, all the way to unusable depending on how you designed it, what platform/device.

Design for all platforms. Not just iPhone and it's very likely that's a minority of the user base. Use extreme caution with analytics data right now. If the mobile site sucks (or sucks for some devices etc), then people won't use it, that will skew results and downplay opportunities.

I'm sure a hundred more things if I had more time and prompting. Feel free to nag me to think on it more sometime or share specifics you can't openly, if you want.

shoobe01

There's no such thing as a thumb reach zone. You're just going to crowd the bottom and cause higher interference what with on-screen home buttons and so forth.

There's a lot more to discuss regarding minimum touch sizes and top of screen is not an unreachable area.

This 10,000%. Always pilot, and yes consider it testing the test.

For others moderating or unmoderated, I'll also be very careful to review the first few results (e.g. day 1, or first 3 real people) and if it's not going to plan then will pause to tweak, or stop and fix for a later test run.

shoobe01

I think you know why.

shoobe01

If not crafty, get a crafty friend. Look online, find a shape and size. Cut out of anything, down to cardboard.

Paint it silver.

Wrap the handle in electrical tape, cord etc. For looks and comfort.

I've done fakes like this that look perfect at 6 ft, but are obviously fake closer and if you need to demonstrate that it's not dangerous to anyone who asks.

shoobe01

It's a Convenience Fee®.

🙄

I've had good results on other displays with stuff like this: https://youtu.be/LMK5aUPpak4?is=XksVdCmZqnNK7cQA

Just let it run for a few hours, see how it is.

Democratic.

Or Kansas Democrats or whatever to not fall into their language.

shoobe01

Ah, this thing. What extra annoys me is that it's actively counterproductive to the business.

See, cash, or even moreso checks, aren't free. At all. Almost all businesses actually have to pay for deposits of those items, cash takes time to count out and reconcile. Time and gas to go drop it off at the bank, and then you get your money sort of whenever. Days or weeks later.

In retail and food, average tickets are higher when you use cards instead of cash.

And, your sign saying you charge extra for cards drives a measurable number of customers away. They might transact today while they're already there but they're less inclined to come back.

All in all it pans out that cards totally pay for themselves with that extra fee. Just like risk, we're bad at analyzing things that are invisible or complicated to account for.

And for the real players: three or four percent is only what you're paying the card processor if you're very lazy or stupid. You can shop around, simply ask for better rates, etc.
