Foy-yay or foy-yer, depending on our accent, I'd say.

In the UK we have some towns with Norman French names. Chesham Bois is officially pronounced "Boyce"

If you want to go deep, Josh Widdicombe did a 4hr podcast series about him (and Noel).

TL;DR - Yes, a parody. He was from a "gotcha" segment on a light entertainment show where celebrities were invited to a pretend children's programme to teach the lead character about their job. But they met the archangel of chaos instead. But Mr Bobby was so popular it went much longer and far, far further than that.

I think that's the key. My kids love Halloween and I don't mind it, but it has pushed Bonfire Night down the priority list in a lot of places and that's a shame.

simonjp

Oh hey I used to live on Aubert Park. This is of no interest to anyone else but it's funny to me!

simonjp

I agree with the others who've suggested that the canton should end on the point. I'd also consider "zooming out" - you could get more of each flag on the hexagon if you were to fit more flag on and fill in the gaps that would be left.

simonjp

That thing was brutal

simonjp

That's brilliant - it certainly shows the different ways to motivate a kid! Reminds me of Scouts/Guides and theirs. I'm glad it worked for you!

simonjp

Can you separate the art from the artist - positive version

simonjp

What is the difference between a Hogsmeade land and a full area?

simonjp

What are you paying for, if you are connected to others' libraries?

simonjp

Oh you've reminded me of the word Winsock

simonjp

If they are close enough or big enough to be confused, they usually get a longer name for specificity. Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Newcastle-under-Lyme (both named for the river they are on) are probably the best known examples, but there are a lot of other ways they can be distinguished:

  • Size: Great Yarmouth and Little Yarmouth
  • Relative location: High Wycombe and West Wycombe
  • Locator: the Newcastles, above
  • Parish Church: Chalfont St Giles and Chalfont St Peter
  • Norman lord's family name: Stoke Mandeville and Stoke Poges
  • Ownership: Kings Langley and Abbots Langley
  • Civic function: Market Rasen, Middle Rasen and West Rasen

Happy birthday!

Happy birthday!

simonjp

An engagement ring is a gift. Do you usually pay people back for their birthday presents to you?

More than this though, it is a signifyer. When you marry, it's no longer "mine" and "yours", but "ours". Making sure you pay him back for shared expenses makes sense as boyfriend and girlfriend. Doing it as your first act as a fiancée says "but nothing is changing". If nothing is changing, what's the point?

simonjp

Tired Yank joke but holding a cricket bat. You're an interesting one!

simonjp

Where was it? We've done this before at places where we were staying self-catering.

simonjp

A lot of people, when first encountering culture shock, retreat into "our way is better" without thinking. I'm going to assume this was Sophie's first visit to the UK.

simonjp

Not on Ryanair, then?

simonjp

Yes, but the use of the word as a metaphor hasn't got anything to do with that. If the hospital had been called St Cheese, that's the word that would've been used.

simonjp

Personally I wouldn't say so. The word comes from the st Mary of Bethlehem asylum in east London - noise and commotion being compared to a mental hospital.

simonjp

Meats and cheeses always pleases

simonjp

has the government communicated anything like this before?

Yes - and Tom Scott took the mickey back then. He's kept the joke website online, amazingly.

simonjp

Err excuse me, I will not accept this erasure of the Isle of Wight, Portsea and Anglesey. That's, like, 5 islands.
