It’s obvious they were going to do this eventually. And given that they overturned roe v wade which I imagine was seen as a more difficult undertaking, now they probably see this as much easier. I would have thought it would be hard to get 5 votes to overturn marriage equality but scotus has done far more insane things like giving the president legal immunity. The really annoying thing is that this is yet another thing the democrats should have gotten legalized legislatively (like abortion) but they felt it was too much of a divisive issue to risk.

Around 35 states in the US have laws against boycotting Israel for public employees and government contractors.

Actually back in the 1930s one of the ways that people were accused of being communists is if they hated fascists too early. Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany were looked at pretty favorably by a lot of Americans for a while.

In Hillary’s attempt to defeat Obama her campaign also started the claims that he wasn’t born in the US.

Don’t forget about how the FBI wrote a report on threats to the US and number one was right wing domestic terrorists. Republicans threw a shit fit about it and the Obama administration buried it and had the FBI move every agent investigating right wing extremism to investigating Muslim extremism.

I’m surprised it’s that low

This is so bizarre. Officially they are being sent to assist the Diplomatic Security Service. That doesn’t make any sense. DSS is more than capable of protecting American diplomats at the Olympics. That’s their entire job and there’s more than 2,000 DSS agents. ICE isn’t trained for this kind of stuff (not that they are well trained for their actual job either). It feels more like ICE are being turned into a personal attack dog and bodyguard. Like a “protection squadron”. I guess it sounds better in German: Schutzstaffel.

I’ve seen it claimed that even with the extra taxes levied by parliament American colonists were paying less in taxes than British citizens in Britain. Is that accurate?

smithe4595

That’s what the reality is but CNN doesn’t want to make it clear. CNN loves the boot.

Dems don’t hold any branch of government but Republicans don’t hold a filibuster proof majority. When democrats hold power they capitulate to republicans. When republicans hold power the dems refuse to fight back. Its heads I win tails you lose.

No miracles are required in fighting back against the administration. The government shutdown was working. Public opinion was strongly shifting against the republicans because the party in power always gets blamed for a shut down. The reporting is that Schumer caved on the shutdown because the republicans were considering nuking the filibuster. Politicians like Schumer depend on the filibuster as an excuse for why nothing can ever get done

I only know them for doing a hate crime while Sliwa was in the middle of a live interview with Fox News.

Congressional democrats have folded twice on the budget. It’s their only point of leverage right now and they surrendered twice. And they were going to do it a third time before ICE executed Pretti.

There’s that and the fact that stock prices are increasingly untethered from reality. Tesla sales have cratered but that doesn’t seem to be hurting their stock price at all.

https://zeteo.com/p/gaza-israel-genocide-poll-ceasefire-us-voters

Ok fine, here’s polling from April 2024. 56% of democrats believed Israel was committing genocide. 83% of democrats supported a permanent ceasefire. 54% of all voters supported blocking arms to Israel until Israel stops blocking humanitarian aid into Gaza.

https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/gaza-genocide-polling-election-2024

Here’s polling from September 2024 showing that Biden and dem leadership’s full throated support for Israel was destroying their support from Arab American voters. This community generally voted 2-1 in favor of democrats. By sept 2024 polling was 46-44 in favor of republicans.

Because Americans are directly funding everything going on in Palestine. The US has given Israel more than $300 billion in aid. Israel was the largest receiver of American aid until Russia invaded Ukraine. And the US military and American corporations are assisting the IDF in the genocide.

smithe4595

Clearly it’s not a wake up call to Obama because he’s using the Schumer playbook. Make a tepid public statement and that’ll be good enough.

smithe4595

I disagree, I thought choke was a great movie

smithe4595

That’s one way that they do it. The other way is what happened with the dems capitulating on the government shut down. None of the senators that voted yes are up for reelection in 2026. So the other bet is that people will just forget by 2028 or 2030. And Schumer voted no that time so that “leadership” could keep its hands clean.

smithe4595

I don’t think it’s stupidity, it’s a matter of what news sources you follow. If you mainly paid attention to mainstream media, you would think Gaza was a nonissue because they never discussed it. Something like 80-90% of democratic voters were against Biden’s support of the destruction of Gaza and 50% of democrats believe it’s a genocide. But I think Gaza was also emblematic for a lot of voters to show deeper problems with Harris as a candidate. If she couldn’t demand the killing of tens of thousands of children to stop even when the overwhelming majority of dem voters supported it, how could she be trusted to fight for other issues important to her potential voters?

smithe4595

It was the second most important issue among swing state Biden voters that didn’t vote for Harris at 20%. The number one issue for this group was the economy at 33%.
