this is why you should research a breed before you get them...

6 weeks is too young to be getting a puppy. that doesn't sound like a good breeder...

About to start an interview loop for a company in Japan. I probably _won't_ get it but it did make me wonder.

I have a dog. They provide relo assistance and all that, like looking for housing and stuff.

I'm assuming the _pet logistics_ part of things shouldn't be too complicated except and mostly for the logistics of bringing him to Japan (all the vaccinations and paperwork, etc.). I'm also assuming with their housing assistance they'd also be able to help me find living accommodations that accept a pet. He's a shiba so pretty standard apartment dog for Japan.

Additionally, say all of this worked out. I moved to Japan. Pet logistics worked out.

If I had to come back to the US for something, like relatives have health issues or something, how easy is it to bring the pet back to the US and then back to JP? Do I need to go through the whole rigamarole again or with the docs all sorted the first time and a vet in JP set up is that no longer needed?

My neighbor here in America is Japanese but they're a JP citizen; they've told me it's super easy to take their dog back and forth, but they're a citizen so I'm a bit apprehensive.

Thanks in advance!

A lot of that is standard shiba that won't really go away. Some can be trained and minimized but you have to be a very consistent and smart trainer.

I'll ask some questions though that are usually a good reminder for myself when I'm fighting a similar battle:

  • you say yours barks at other people/dogs or don't get along with them, do they behave the same with you? can you pet them sometimes?
  • can you get yours to do tricks for treats?

I'm going to guess yours treats you very differently from other people and dogs. That's what you need to latch on to and remind yourself of.

Yours likely loves you more than you realize. They just don't really show it like for instance a golden retriever does.

a lot of issues, like those of the keyboard, long pre-date the current AI revolution.

no experience with this specifically but do you regularly sit on the floor with him and feed him treats for doing the right thing/trick? have you tried kibble? what about things that take some time to chew, like a turkey tendon, that you can hold for him while he chews?

mine sheds regularly throughout the year. blowing coat happens twice but each time can take up to 2-3 months. it's not all at once. so either you're getting big chunks of fur or lots of random loose ones basically 365 days a year.

i went to pick up something the other day and the person immediately said "i can tell your dog loves you" and pointed at what had been a freshly laundered shirt that morning full of hair, and he's not even blowing his coat right now.
