You benefit indirectly from the knowledge gained. That is what tax money pays for. It doesn't mean you are entitled to access the articles for free any more than you are entitled to walk into a grant funded researcher's office and use his or her computer.

Actually it is. Peer reviewers don't get paid anything for normal journal articles. Neither do journal editors. They do it for the prestige, which is free to the journal publisher.

It costs money because the companies that publish the research have to pay their staff to format the articles, index the abstracts, edit the shitty scientific writing, store pdfs online, recruit and keep an editorial staff, etc. Its not the best system, but its not a total scam either.

Its not as bad as being racial minority or being gay. In fact, I work in a university and its generally assumed that people are atheist/agnostic unless they state otherwise. Sometimes people will get huffy about it, but those are few and far between. I've have a few experiences that I would consider true oppression, but these just made me angry more than they caused any kind of resource loss or personal injury.

With that said, it can be annoying for some people to look down on you because of your lack of religious affiliation. I just don't let it get under my skin, although I wouldn't fault those who have a stronger reaction.
