I think Snowy 2.0 deserves a more balanced discussion than simply pointing at the cost overruns and declaring the entire project a failure. For some perspective, consider what Australia spends on other major tunnelling projects:
Melbourne Metro Tunnel: $13.48 billion, including twin 9km tunnels and five underground stations.
Sydney Metro City & Southwest: approximately $22–23 billion for a 30km rail extension, including substantial tunnelling and station construction.
Sydney Metro West: approximately $27–29 billion for a 24km underground railway with twin tunnels and multiple stations.
Now consider Snowy 2.0. Against the projects above. 20 to 25 billion is in the ball park for all of these projects.
We’re constructing approximately 42km of major waterway tunnels through difficult mountainous geology, an enormous underground power station, and associated hydroelectric infrastructure. All of the to electrical infrastructure to distribute and this is built in a remote alpine nation park.
There’s also an important distinction regarding the original $2 billion figure Malcolm Turnbull announced in 2017. That was a preliminary estimate, made before the feasibility study was completed. It was never the project’s final approved construction budget.
Unlike a conventional battery installation, Snowy 2.0 will provide enormous amounts of long duration energy storage, helping balance renewable generation across extended periods of low wind and solar output. We’re building infrastructure that could remain productive for well over a century. I think Australians sometimes underestimate the scale, complexity and long term value of the infrastructure we’re capable of constructing. The cost overruns are a legitimate concern, but they shouldn’t be the only measure by which we judge Snowy 2.0.

Battery’s as a technology don’t offer the same benefits as pumped hydro. We need storage in our system that is longer duration then battery’s

This project is run by snowy hydro limited a company that is 100% owned by the Australian government. It’s also extremely profitable and has been running large hydro projects for the last 70 years plus years.
Do you really want to give this project to someone else?

You seem like a corporate boot licker

This is where free trades and constantly chasing the lowest price for commodities erodes our economy and increases fragility in the system

I’m surprised the grandparents house has mysteriously burnt down.

I’m seriously feed up with the justice system in Victoria. Shit like this was happening 20 years ago when I was in high school and the police wouldn’t pursue charges against youths because the courts wouldn’t punish them.
Now the problem only seems to have gotten worse.

Fair, Jim is a joke.

Yanis Varoufakis has somehow reinvented himself as an economic sage despite his most famous real world experiment lasting about five months. As Greek finance minister, he demanded debt restructuring, lower surplus targets, an end to austerity, more public investment, greater European risk sharing and sweeping reform of the Eurozone essentially demanding creditors absorb more risk while Greece remained comfortably inside the monetary system those creditors underwrote. Then reality arrived. His government spent months playing chicken with its creditors, negotiations collapsed, capital controls were imposed, Greek banks closed and the country came perilously close to crashing out of the euro. Varoufakis resigned, and Greece subsequently accepted another bailout with austerity conditions anyway. He is the perfect celebrity economist: spectacularly confident, intellectually theatrical and permanently available to explain why everyone else is an idiot. The inconvenient part is that when he briefly got the opportunity to move from lecture theatre economics to actually running economic policy, the performance ended rather differently.
This guy is a fool

Judging by the comments in the thread people clearly aren’t aware of the free rider problem.

People buy stolen IP all the time. This is just the latest iteration of the problem.

100% we need to reeducate girls in school to stop this wave of toxic femininity for taking hold and causing harm to children

I hate this line of thinking. The same idiots who say I don’t speed so speed cameras aren’t a problem.

Oh no! Your guys might have to train Australian workers and pay market rates for labor.

No, he stood by and supported them.

I would almost be tempted to inflict ON on all of the Dan Andrews loving flogs in Victoria.

You’re mixing up how diesel markets actually work. Fuel tax credits aren’t a “handout” they stop off road industries being taxed for roads they don’t use. Scrap them and you’re just adding a new input tax to mining, ag, and construction. The “it’ll lower prices for everyone else” bit doesn’t hold up either. Diesel is globally priced taxing big users here doesn’t make it cheaper locally

This country is literally a house pyramid scheme that’s controlled by multinational corporations. It’s being a joke.
The BoM has acknowledged genuine errors in its historical temperature records, including duplicated observations identified by independent researchers. This also isn’t the first time the BoM’s temperature measurements have faced legitimate scrutiny. There have previously been concerns about automatic weather stations failing to accurately record extreme low temperatures in Victoria and NSW’s alpine regions due to equipment limitations and measurement procedures. None of this automatically invalidates Australia’s long term warming trend, but it does demonstrate why independent scrutiny of the underlying data is important. The BoM should be held to the same standards of transparency, accuracy and reproducibility as any other scientific institution. Dismissing legitimate questions about data quality simply because they come from climate sceptics is no more scientific than claiming a handful of errors disproves climate change.
