Warranty is just tied to the device, not the purchasers account.

It's really cool of them to do that. I can count on one hand the number of companies that care about the ecosystem they exist in. The Frame is likely to be the most moddable headset on the market at this rate.
tastesliketriangle
This is being said in response to the idea of opening up that chassis to install the metal baseplate of a CPU heatsink on the board. That would absolutely affect the RF characteristics, I don't know how you could think otherwise.
tastesliketriangle
Usually you pick a build volume you need and go from there. The ender 3 V3 SE is probably the most affordable thing you could start with. It's a bed slinger, which means the print bed moves back further than its dimensions imply. If you want more compact, you want a CoreXY style printer, but they tend to be more expensive. Maybe a Centauri Carbon 2?
tastesliketriangle
Yeah me too. I could also go for a Pico 4 Enterprise. Gets me wireless and is cheap enough I could replace it if I ever have the option to buy a frame. And I can root it and disable telemetry, unlike Meta.
tastesliketriangle
Good for you!

Day one lottery, waitlisted.
People who got into the reserve queue have 2027 dates, I'm not getting there until 2028 I guess lol.
I might just get another headset. Valve is selling base stations new, I could get 3 + vive wands + BSB 2e. All new, would run me about $2400 as opposed to the $1500 Frame.
tastesliketriangle
because I discovered AC Rally
Wait, AC Rally has VR support? It's not listed on their product page.
tastesliketriangle
and power efficiency needs work.
How long should the Frame last? It's a more powerful headset than the Q3 while having basically the same size battery. You can't cheat physics.
tastesliketriangle
So is it just saying "here are leds" or is it being exposed as some kind of unknown device with coordinates, or something else?
This is super interesting.
tastesliketriangle
also pretty sure that you cant say „only stored data“ and than upload the same data and claim, thats not stored anymore lol
You're misquoting. It's data that is "only stored locally(on the headset)" as in data not transmitted to Meta servers. Data stored on both the headset and servers, as well as data only stored on the servers, is not "only stored locally".
tastesliketriangle
A quest 3 never required a facebook login
Ah yes, it only requires a Meta login. Which is sooooo different. So different that the Meta privacy policy is still hosted at the Facebook URL.
tastesliketriangle
Let's stop this inane distracting misleading obsession with Meta's harmless Data policies
Actually a Meta shill LMAO. I hope they're paying you at least.
tastesliketriangle
The English page says:
data that is only stored locally on headsets is not used by Meta to inform the ads you see
Which to me, means I should assume that anything meta uploads will be used for ads.
And that list is quite long.
tastesliketriangle
Can you?
I had a Rift given to me by a friend, and it required an app with internet connectivity before I was even allowed to download drivers. It needed to run constantly during play and tried to run on the PC I used constantly.
tastesliketriangle
literally zero negative consequences
Using Facebook or a Quest contributes your private information to a corporate surveillance dragnet that allows companies to profile you, and perhaps one day persecute you. Even if you believe the company wouldn't do that, the data trail could be hacked and stolen in the future.
If you don't care, whatever. But saying there are no negative consequences is naively incorrect.
tastesliketriangle
I don't see any reason to not use one of them. Just pick your favorite and start playing. Leave the other for support, if they don't respond in a couple months then think about what to do with the extra.
tastesliketriangle
You could contact support, they might give you store credit or something. Wouldn't hurt to ask.
tastesliketriangle
But don't downvote people who are honest about it if people ask for unbiased guidance
Wasn't me. I wanted you to defend your position, and you did at least partially.
And that the built in audio is worse than in Q3
It's funny you mention that because the Anton video you linked made it sound like both were interchangeably poor.
What reviews did you watch if these are new information for you?
The videos that actually show up when searching YouTube for Steam Frame.
Sure the developer of H3VR is certainly a Reddit troll
For the record, people were saying that for months before the embargo lift. Just because the trolls happened to be right doesn't mean it wasn't wild speculation made in bad faith.
Anyway some of the points Anton made are very good, the controllers seem like an unfortunate prioritizing of "steam Deck on your face" instead of being VR first. I especially say this as someone who is left-handed, and owns a Steam Controller.
If I want to play flatscreen games I could just connect my Controller instead of having devices that excel at nothing.
tastesliketriangle
Xbox controllers don't need reverse engineering. They just work. They've had drivers in the Linux kernel for ages.
Sorry; this is my mistake, I got confused which comment I was responding to. I meant your other comment that ignored my point about reverse engineering the hardware dongle to allow using an Xbox Controller on PC.
Steam Controller doesn't have Linux Kernel drivers.
The 7.3 kernel is merging support. I don't know how good it is, but 6 months seems like an OK pace for something like that to get mainlined.
You have some twisted understanding of how things have been in the past decade.
Eye-rollingly cringe.
And immutable does mean locked down. You have to use flatpacks to install more software and can't modify the underlying system.
I haven't personally used that particular flavor of immutable OS, but I'm sure there are ways to do whatever I'd need or want to.
Also Appimages work in addition to Flatpaks.
tastesliketriangle
Valve's Steam OS is immutable. It's not basic Arch "BTW".
I know. What I don't know is what your problem with that is. I have an immutable distro on my laptop, that doesn't mean it's some locked down blackbox.
I don't think you understand drivers if you think they have to have an API.
What exactly do you think a driver does? The controller shows up as an HID device in windows, but that's apparently unacceptable to you so what should it do?
Dualsense has windows compatibility that the Steam Controller does not. I can just plug in a Dualsense and play. It will just work inside and outside of Steam identically.
LOL. LMAO. I picked the Dualsense specifically because I had one before my SC, and the windows support was terrible. IIRC it didn't show up as an XInput pad so the only way it would work on windows was individual game support / "hacked together" SDL support / DS4windows support.
You literally cannot give your steam games away or loan them to friends.
I never said you could, your assertion was that Valve was the reason for the state of the industry which is incredulous.
It works as a keyboard and mouse by default without Steam.
Yes that was clearly a tradeoff they made to make it work better in the use case of having the controller in your living room where you might not have a keyboard nearby. You can disagree with that, but it's not some conspiracy.
You are being entirely disingenuous here.
Me huh?
Why are you simping for a corporation with...
Mhm. Not simping, but some of your arguments are awful.
I looked it up and Valve made...
I don't see how this is relevant to the points I've made.
Frankly you're the disingenuous one here. I asked you why Xbox controllers haven't had the same level of community reverse engineering in years the way the SC has, and you handwaved that.
I'll fight about the Dualsense because it was the worst controller I've ever used, and was absolutely not plug-and-play outside of Steam. But I won't complain that Sony is terrible for not giving it functional drivers, because I understand it wasn't a priority.
And then you come back with money arguments that don't matter to me and shouldn't to you. Do you honestly think companies take on "risk" for the benefit of the consumer? Has Meta taken on the risk of selling VR headsets at a loss for the benefit of the consumer?
tastesliketriangle
It's not first-party, true. But that doesn't automatically make Valve the devil. This support came pretty much instantly because the Controller wasn't difficult to work with, unlike many other controllers.
hack drivers together to get it to work
Lol, you don't know anything. The support was like 40 lines of definitions, not a hack.
The Controller also has a DIY puck someone made, but an equivalent for Xbox controllers doesn't exist even after their lifetime. Ask yourself, why is that?
tastesliketriangle
Valve will only let you use it through steam.
It works outside of steam. SDL has support for it.
They could have easily made independent Windows and Linux drivers, but chose not to. That is vendor lock in.
WRT windows specifically... Drivers with what fucking API? I guess the Dualsense controllers also have "vendor lock-in" eh?
Seriously making a product to work with the software your company already has isn't lock-in. A few pieces of non-steam software have added support, and it's only been out for a few months.
Steam Frame is similar, it's only going to work through Steam. It's not an independent non-locked device.
It runs Arch BTW.
It is on them for not securing contracts when ram was cheaper. Same for the steam machine.
You are ignorant about the reality of the RAM situation, contract law hasn't meant shit recently.
Steam Deck is also a consequence of Valve holding a monopoly; nobody else could do it because the ecosystem of 90% of gamer's libraries are Steam locked.
Are you implying nobody else could make a handheld PC designed for gaming?
They're almost unilaterally the reason gamers can't resell their games or loan them to friends.
Yeah no, still blatantly incorrect.
tastesliketriangle
As someone who buys games on websites, GoG, Itch.io, etc. I have purchased one (1) game from Epic and wouldn't do it again. Their launcher sucks ass and has since before it had a game store crowbarred into it. And that's entirely the fault of Epic, and no-one else's.
You're allright.
