This is part of a larger style convention conversation in programming. Ultimately, a computer is just consuming a string of ASCII characters and turns them into bytes, but humans are the ones who like reading stuff. The computer doesn’t care. So at the end of the day, humans are the ones who decide which ASCII characters are the right ones, and humans…unfortunately… have lots of opinions lol

Which is why I acknowledge that it was a stretch.. it was an end of season episode when they knew they were coming back

This one is a stretch, but Dennis does TRY to end his life with the gang by closing up the bar and leaving for good.

teetaps

Not a strict one, sure. But a kipping muscle up is still surely its own thing with its own progression and mastery and range of motion and stuff, though?

While I agree, you can’t deny that you probably care less because the language that’s dying, isn’t English, and it sounds like you’re at least fairly good at English.

If your first language and your parents first language and your grandparents’ ONLY language, was the dying language in question, you’d probably be more worked up about it

My read on people’s objection is that superman is lowercase S. He’s the cookie cutter. So to make a generic superhero, you’d start with superman-like tropes. Hence, invincible and the boys are just superman tropes.

However, the argument people have made is that whenever the superhero in question is a black male, it’s Electric man, capital E, in another costume. The trope people have issue with is that a black superhero, defaults to Electric man. And they’re asking, why is it that black superheroes are so often Electric man capital E, not superman lowercase S.

I don’t know if I agree fully, but that’s my understanding of the conversation, at least

You asked AI a reasoning question and it gave you a reasoned answer.

Just talk to people, man.

The point of school is to prepare a child for life as an adult. A school with more resources is going to do this better than school with fewer. That’s just a fact.

Even if a student doesn’t currently perform very well on standard exams, that doesn’t mean that A) that is the only measure of life preparation that will matter to them, or B) that they aren’t capable of change or improvement.

To decide that they don’t deserve access to resources is to purposely deprive them of both opportunities.

Going to a private school might give them the opportunity to try things that expensive schools give them a chance to try. Maybe you have an entrepreneur, a sports player, a creative, or just a well connected and learned person whose strength isn’t tests, but is with other skills — if they don’t grow up in an environment that can exercise those qualities, that narrows the chances that those qualities have to develop. Private schools are expensive because they have more resources. More resources means access to more diverse opportunities, less dense classrooms, and more support systems in place.

That being said pvt schools are obviously incredibly expensive. That’s just a non starter for many Zimbabweans. If that’s just not possible for you, it’s not the end of the world

No.

One trap to be aware of is that with some PhD programs in the US your “pay” is a stipend, so what it says on the check is what you receive in the mail. Which means they don’t withhold taxes on it automatically… which means when April 1st comes around, they’ll be asking you for a pretty big chunk of change, which washes out a lot of what you think your take-home “salary” is

The Meachum family story was the only reason I stayed with it

Definitely the first 2 seasons. The third I haven’t finished… and there’s a reason for that

teetaps

Definitely better lol

This is gonna sound cheesy but Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey broke my brain. I was pretty deeply religious and yeah, having Neil degrass Tyson just flat out point at religious dogma and be like “the universe doesn’t give a shit” really sent me on a journey I could never come back from

One of the reasons I kinda gave up on that endeavour was reading Jonathan Haidt’s “The Righteous Mind” which is a research book about the intersection of politics and psychology and asks the question “what is the connection between moral psychology and beliefs, and how those things play out in politics and society.”

The answer is… not encouraging.

You have to understand that the research, at least at the time, showed that some pretty intense deeply rooted psychology goes into shaping our morality and our consequent voting habits. It’s not a thing you can change with a couple of well meaning conversations. To shift someone ideologically would require undoing and replacing decades of social learning that most people just aren’t prepared to do willingly.

In other words, even if someone were willing to have a conversation, there are some principles that are wired super deep in our psyches that would take years to flip or break out of. I grew up Christian and it’s not just a matter of, “read the bible, see inconsistencies, now atheist.” It took years for me, and lots of others here, to eventually say “atheist” out loud because there’s several belief systems that are so deeply embedded that it would be like trying to pull teeth if you did it forcefully. Life experiences just have to sort of happen, over time, for someone to reprioritise the many components of their morality.

But it’s not impossible. We’re all capable of change — that’s why many of us are here.

The book is a bit dated now, but I’d still give it a look over

Funny, I had a great time at university BUT, I know I should have picked different subjects, and that mistake started in high school

teetaps

I would argue the CGI age up of Sam should disqualify that case lol but it was what, like 10 years ago now?

As much as R&M can be an absolute dumpster fire of cringe, I have to hand it to them for paying attention to details like this in their satire.

I recently rewatched Now You See Me and immediately after, the R&M heist episode and yeah for the most part it was just shitting on heist movies but it also had a lot of callbacks to interesting ways sci fi subverts the heist movie genre

There is a third reason. He is a narcissist. He wants to name and build things after himself.

It started with “Trump brand” stuff when he was just a businessman-celebrity — steaks, casinos, high rises, hotels, golf courses, a university, a tv show, etc.. and when he became a politician, that became sneakers, phones, a social media platform, the gulf, the White House decor, the reflecting pool, the arch, the east wing, the Kennedy Center, the helipad, the Nobel prize, he floated a statue at one point too

His measure of success and legacy is how many things he has his name on. It obviously also helps that if his name is on it, he’s probably getting a cut of the revenue it makes

I remember my wife, who drives us on rare road trips (I never bothered to get a new license after I moved for college) once drove us to a grocery store that we have walked to several times. She turned on the GPS and I was just… aghast… she just couldn’t fathom getting behind the wheel without having some kind of GPS assistance even though we’d been there several times before. In her defence, driving in the city is sometimes a toss up since roadworks can just happen. But still…

Every time I hear this man I do the Leonardo point and say, “that’s not X… that’s Spongeboy me-Bob”

teetaps

Try this: sit down and write a detailed plan for you to go from your house to the grocery store and back. Write down every explicit detail. Write down the explicit route. Approximate how long it’ll take, how many steps you’ll take, how much money you’ll need down to the cent, how much fuel/energy your body and your car/bus/train will take, how many breaths of air you’ll need, whether and when you’ll have to pee, exactly when you’ll leave and exactly when you’ll arrive, accurate to within 2 minutes.

Now do the same but for a grocery store half way around the world.

That’s not even CLOSE to the level of project management necessary to do a space mission

Mister, doctor?

I loved dexters lab because yes he was a weird science kid but he also had boring ass normal parents and I liked the dichotomy. Plus I never had a sister so I had no frame of reference for how wacky that sibling relationship could get
