Interesting. Here is another recent article about desert agriculture. Seems like two opposite approaches to the same problem.

There's somewhat of a burden in having to make appropriate facial expressions to match the given social or workplace situation. I bet some people are relieved that people can't see their face so they don't have to put as much effort into producing correct or even subservient facial expressions. all day long.

Uncle Sam doesn't look kindly on people who have lived 50 years and have nothing to show for it. In America you gotta S**t or get off the pot.

I don’t think the availability of this technology is relevant to the above comment. Life expectancy in general has risen on average over the years regardless of the technology or methods employed.

Should the least fortunate in society receive the most luxurious technology ever invented? Probably not. But will their longevity continue to gradually improve with basic advances here and there... yes.

Female mosquitos are simply going to evolve the tendency to mate multiple times in their lives. Or simply put the ones that do will be the only ones left after a while.

I believe there was a recent change to California legal doctrine that made utilities liable for fire damage caused by their equipment even if no negligence is involved?

https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/10/22/20916820/california-wildfire-climate-change-blackout-insurance-pge

And with climate change making wildfires more and more common the financial risk of this liability is not something any company could afford.

So when the change occurred, rather than just doing business as usual and taking on all that risk, they started doing highly unpopular "safety shutoffs" to manage the risk of starting fires #MaliciousCompliance. This is the law of unintended consequences biting California in the backside.

In my experience, any time we can't have fun or nice things, there is a lawyer, an insurance adjuster or a compliance officer behind that decision. Their goal is to eliminate risk as much as possible with no regard to convenience or fun.

The California utility has options to make their grid safer but it will take time and tons of money. I think the state jumped the gun on shifting liability to the utility company. It could have used the threat of shifting liability to get the company to meet a set of annual safety goals instead without disrupting consumers.

The United States is on the democratic spectrum. We're not a total democracy where every minute decision requires a national vote. Neither are we on the dictatorship side of things where one person makes all decisions.

Even the green new deal lady will go against her environmental values when an election is at stake.

Chopping down trees for paper and driving internal combustion vehicles all over the country has an impact on the climate. So what benefit do we get for this cost? Well, a pen pal program could easily take place over email or social media. The only thing it does is try to make the case that we still use the postal service a bunch. But if we need a pen pal program to make this case, then it actually helps make the opposite case. Also millennials hate addressing physical envelopes.

I think screwing with the election and USPS is wrong, but this idea seems pointless. Better to just get an astronaut suit off Amazon and go vote in person.

The cop wanted to be sure there was no gun in his right hand. The guy would not reveal both his hands after several commands. That’s when the gun came out. The gun went away when he started complying at least with his hands.

The dude did not deserve to die, but I am not impressed with his part in the police interaction.

I rented a room on craigslist from a 400lb former crackhead woman and her 180lb husband who hacked satellite boxes for a living. (He said... "It's not illegal because the signals are coming to your house"). I paid for a month and they immediately spent the money on fireworks. We got a notice that the water was being shut off within the first week I was there and also they threw a kegger one night and tried to use a screwdriver as a keg tap which did not go well. Every possession they had was leased from their tv to their expensive pimped out truck. I only lasted about a week there. Had to store my clothes outside for about a month to get the smoke smell off them. I just paid one month of rent up front and told them to keep it.

At first, I thought this was one of those one-sided couples, but afterwards I felt like they deserved one-another. Maybe even felt a little sorry for the woman.

Yea, the home equity loan is a notarized document saying the parents lose their house if the parents don't make the payments. The excuse that they could pay if only they got paid by the daughter's boyfriend is not going to keep their home from being taken away.

I urge Biden not to take the bait. Instead he should call their obvious bluff. There's no way the most left-leaning group of democrats would just sit out this election and let Trump win.

All democrats need to do right now is win so they can be the ones in power when it's time to redraw congressional districts to undo decades of gerrymandering and to choose someone not staunchly conservative to sit on the supreme court.

If they do that, then they will have a fair chance of winning not just this election, but future elections as well.

Once you have a fair fight and the rules are not rigged, then you can take up issues that are popular, but also somewhat controversial.

People are demanding that these teens be removed from the cheerleading squad and punished by their school (which is the government) for their speech and opinions. You are correct that so far, this has not happened.

The bill of rights exists to ensure this never happens. It is relevant to the ongoing public discussion of whether the government can/should punish these teens because of their speech. Some people don't understand this fact.

I agree an apology would be decent. Perhaps they just like redneck boys and the confederate symbol just happened to be on the shirt too. Everyone is so divided that nobody gives anyone the benefit of the doubt.

The people shall not be deprived or abridged of their right to speak, to write, or to publish their sentiments

None of the cheerleaders seem to be wearing school markings/uniforms and they don't appear to be on school property either. It's just a group of friends expressing a controversial, but constitutionally protected opinion. Their relation to the school or the cheerleading squad is irrelevant.
