If you solder, I sell the IDE Reborn boards on Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122807377118

I made a video of one I installed a couple of weeks ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng4Gr3L0fZg

Yes you can definitely make it work. You have to use the Startech ide2sata adaptors or one that use that chipset

For me I like it because I have a library of discs so this way I can still use those. You don't have to boot from a dreamshell disc, this one has a bios replacement too.

thameslink

Well the Dreamcast is from 1999 so it's not really surprising that the motherboard is PATA based.

thameslink

Keep your optical drive, uses dreamshell, have to cut case, much cheaper, easy to get one.

thameslink

In tandem

thameslink

I will, but I can hardly keep up with demand. Should have a few to sell at the end of the week.

thameslink

Can you post a picture of the motherboard? Check for shorts eg 10 & 6, 14 & 10. Does the optical drive work with no HDD connected?

thameslink

Hi, I had one with a similar sounding problem. Check you have no shorts to gnd and also good connections on all points to gnd especially those larger ones around the edge. Which motherboard and drive?

thameslink

Oh I play burned games too, but some I have original and I like having them to play so I wouldn't want to ditch the optical drive. Mind you that's all hypothetical in fact, as I have about 10 Dreamcast systems lying about all in various states of repair and I keep buying more. But when I settle down on just 1 or 2 they will have optical drives.

Gawd bless yer guv'nor

For me the key selling point is still keeping my library. Mnemo's board is fantastic & the other replacement one gdemu, awesome kit. But I have a Dreamcast collection that means something to me, beyond its actual price tag and I still want to keep playing those.

Perfectly normal, the Samsung GD-ROM drives tend to be a bit quieter. I'll bet money we're listening to a Yamaha unit. That's just the sound of it purring.

thameslink

Attach a hard drive to a Dreamcast

thameslink

No problems with the vent, the header sits forward (or is it aft) about 10-15mm so there is plenty of clearance.

thameslink

There's a bunch more info in the listing. Or you can read about it on the creators site. https://gametrackssite.wordpress.com/installation-2/

You can adjust the laser easily. https://youtu.be/dvt2rIDbavU Usually I find they boot copies more easily - actually I use genuine copy of Gigawing as a test disk, for some reason only a correctly tuned laser will boot that.

thameslink

So do these diy HDD mods disable the internal GD-ROM drive? I'm planning to have a go at installing one but I thought you have to boot the dream shell from optical.
