The isp of propulsion systems

theinvolvement

diamond drill bits and 8 nimh aa's, gonna defeat them with 11 volts of abrasive fury.

theinvolvement

An aircraft carrier.

I assume that they would use the kilopower project to achieve this.

It would require people to set up though, so this would end up being a moon base centered around an array of small reactors.

I'm hoping this gets lumped into a fund for a lunar colony, rather than mandating a mission to just land a reactor.

theinvolvement

If I understand, you took a long exposure with an SII filter to remove light pollution, then a long exposure with the H-alpha filter to capture the hydrogen emissions, and composited them using guide stars?

An asteroid could be rigged with a circular maglev track, and on it a several km long tether could be installed and spun up.

so it could match the relative velocity of a passing craft, latch on and put it in a sort of centrifuge orbit.

so you could think of the asteroid as a system to store and release momentum, either in its spin or velocity.

catching a craft would transfer momentum, it could store and release that using the maglev as a mass driver.

so it could adjust its orbital trajectory by catching or releasing craft, and by catapulting rock or cargo.

you could use it to catch craft and release them in a fashion similar to a gravity assist.

look up multiple kill vehicle, that thing is a tiny spacecraft

theinvolvement

Couldn't we just repurpose the multiple kill vehicle as a camera drone for landing?

No need to worry about dust if your camera is a few hundred meters away.

Using slam, a drone could find its absolute position and orientation relative to the surface.

Radio time of flight measurements of the drones could be used to find the absolute orientation and position of the lander.

Have you looked at nuclear thermal rockets, or electro thermal rockets for a boost?

I understand ntr's are planned to be tested this decade, and the iss has a boatload of electric generation available for an electric propulsion system.

I just looked at the payload capacity of the starship, and now i am wondering why recycling the iss is even a consideration.

theinvolvement

At that point you could create a mix of fuel and additives that raise the melting point of the regolith, drop it in a hole and cause a meltdown.

Then you set up a geothermal power plant over it.

Earlier this year, I experienced water over ethernet.

A line running about 200 feet outside started condensing water and dripping water at the switch, I pumped it out with a diaphragm pump after which the packet loss went to zero.

it contained about 30 ml of water.

I think a giant inductor would be more suited to capturing some of the energy of a lightning strike.

To make it economical, you would need a way to increase the frequency of lightning strikes, and reduce their strength so as not to break the device with z-pinch like effects.

A laser induced plasma channel could be used to achieve this.

on the ground you have a laser which fires through or directly past the pole, its wavelength and power density is such that it ionizes the air into a conductive plasma.

so a virtual wire is formed between the pole and the clouds, this reduces the threshold for a lightning strike, causing it to occur immediately, and on demand.

So you got a several ton inductor getting blasted with current every minute or so during dry stormy conditions.

anyone got an idea of how to make use of that?

theinvolvement

I think it would be faster because it does not rely on thermal conduction.

theinvolvement

hows about using optical heating, use a transparent sleeve with a dyed inner layer that absorbs light, so only the inner surface gets heated rather than the bulk.

With led's providing the heat, you get a faster response time, so perceptible heat pulses could be employed.

sheathing tape

theinvolvement

diluted and concentrated might not be the right words in retrospect.

If it was so old that it crystallized, it might have formed new compounds that are not suitable as nutrients.

I can barely remember who I was back when I commented.

theinvolvement

in the past 4 years, I've worn a vr headset for 2 years.

vr has been an acceptable substitute for real life during the pandemic.

To be clear, thats 2 years total time spent socializing and sleeping with an htc vive headset on my face, and later an index headset.

I won't be satisfied with the headset miniaturization until its an optic nerve implant, despite all the time i've spent, it is definitely still a brick tied to my face.

theinvolvement

I had a read through before posting, it just mentions when the temperature increases.

Plastics tend to melt around 200C or higher, perhaps uv exposure has decomposed it to a waxy solid with a lower melting point?

theinvolvement

How did the plastic reach its melting point?

It kind of looks like it was being burned in a pile on sand, maybe in an attempt to dispose of it.

theinvolvement

I think it would be easier if the port was itself plugged into a port.

a bit bulkier, but it would no longer require soldering to replace.

theinvolvement

I agree that proprietary technology is not an acceptable outcome.

If we developed a universal fabricator/recycler, but it was proprietary, it would make a company stinking rich.

but if it were open source, it would increase the worlds gdp massively.

theinvolvement

Wouldn't you like to see what kind of technology we develop if we go to space?

I'm personally excited to see how far we can take isru, and recycling.

theinvolvement

That seems like it would be extremely useful, either for manipulation or catharsis.

theinvolvement

A possibility would be a miniaturized projector, or sparse array of projectors.

The projector could be made from a micro led array, and a glass lense with a different refractive index from the contact.

An issue with such a projector is that it is floating, the projection would not be firmly coupled to the eye movement, eye movement would jolt the image around.

The projector in this case does not adjust your eyes focal length, it projects an image directly on the retina, to you it would appear as though the image in in focus, even when you look at near and far objectives.

It kind of makes me feel uncomfortable knowing that at some point in the future, a mote of smart dust could project vector graphics in my eye.

theinvolvement

What do you think about prevention then, burying synthetic mesh along unmarked paths, so that after mining it can be pulled up to overturn the soil.
