There is lot of risk with this plan. Why not keep three years of living expenses in SGOV and Money Market and the rest in index funds. Then replenish your living expense every six month by selling some equities. If the market is down at your interval, wait six months more and check again... This should give you enough cushion to remain invested and survive any market drops. Seems like a better plan than switching your investments to income based investments. You need money for 30-40 years. You will have too much risk that you will lose out to inflation if you don't stay invested in equities.
