The difference is your lawnmower's gas cap is working memory. We are terrible with working memory.

But completely useless paperclip-on-the-floor memory? 💯

Yeah. Catch a possession charge when you're 18, and your parents don't have any money: criminal record, maybe probation or jail. Good luck getting the best jobs after that.

Catch a possession charge when you're 18 and your parents are rich: no consequences. none at all. Life has no consequences.

The system is rigged, it's a crime to  be poor.

War on drugs = war on the poor. Another war America can't win.

It is incredible that we have a judicial system that meticulously holds the government to this standard.

Avg cost of a home in Houston city limits: $477k. > Avg cost of a home in Boston city limits: $744k

I will look at none of it

but they better exist and be free of grammatical errors, or it will be the instructions' fault.

Also I will only see the red underline 5 seconds after doing the thing I wasn't supposed to do.

They may have been fighting for control for some time before the video starts.

my advice is, "don't hang around and admire your work"

there are more unique uuids than stars in the milky way.

the chances of a single collision after generating millions is practically non-existent, even given the birthday paradox. Billions or trillions, maybe.

Having a fundamental understanding of "truth" is a life skill.

a cyclist has the right of way when traveling to the right of cars.

the bicycle was traveling perpendicular to the lanes.

  I graduated in 2004.

I was diagnosed as an adult, I'm currently going through the process of having my children evaluated/diagnosed. They'll be hearing my stories about how I walked uphill to school, both ways, in the snow. And that kids these days have it so easy. On the upside, they'll learn some coping and organization strategies young instead of just thinking they're broken for 40 years.

decent furniture costs what it costs. If a $500 chair is going to send your employee to a specialist when a $1200 chair wouldn't, your company is shaving costs in the wrong place.

The older you get, the more you recognize that everyone around you has half of your experience.

Some combination of the following:

  1. A PhD in any field is an accreditation that you are capable of following through on a very hard multi-year mission.
  2. Hiring managers without PhDs often confuse a PhD as a measure of intelligence.
  3. PhDs in natural science and engineering will usually have very solid math foundations.
  4. PhDs in natural science usually become self-taught data scientists due to the nature of their research (dealing with enormous volumes of data points).

edit: none of these are accreditations to be a software engineer. I agree with /u/Conscious-Secret-775, some of the worst SWEs I know are PhDs, and their degree often promotes them to a level of unearned authority on the subject of software.

tuxedo25

There's no classism here.  Software is and always has been the ultimate meritocracy. You're not exclusively born into a family that has access to a computer. 99% of the world population has access to one. Learning how it works is entirely up to you.

tuxedo25

a PhD is an incredible accomplishment that says the person has very deep expertise in... something. It's probably not programming, it's probably not related to your business, but they're an expert in something, somewhere.

Isn't the exact controversy in Maine right now that the dem's candidate for senate will be chosen by a secret cabal?

there's already a tax to fund trains and busses. it's called general funds and it's made up of every source of revenue the state already has.

tuxedo25

that is the premise of government. you don't need a commuter toll (one of the  most regressive forms of taxation) to improve public transportation.

tuxedo25

Who needs time for hobbies and families when you can add 2.5 hours/week to your commute.
