Core - Proc. Parts, Proc. Fairings

SRBs - Spice Launch System

RS-68 - Constellation Essentials

Yep. You can use RL10 or some other small engines for circularization, orbital maneuvers and deorbitation.

RS-25 can be shutdown in pairs to gradually reduce TWR during takeoff.

winged_7

Pretty cool design. I can assure you that this would work in RO as well.

  1. Install Realism Overhaul - mod which scales mass, size, thrust, mass ratio, isp to original levels,
  2. Install FASA or DECQ - Saturn V from FASA is definitely supported, not sure about DECQ - I remember I used previous version in RO.
  3. You can create your own Saturn V from procedural parts like I did: https://i.imgur.com/LS1n7VQ.jpg - RO would allow you for very accurate performance.

23 years with 9000 m/s? That feels like you're doing something wrong.

Here is my transfer to Neptune for a comparison, 1969 year, 9347 m/s - 11,5 years transit time, without even a single gravity assist: https://i.imgur.com/HSeX0kW.png

Do you use MJ Maneuver Planner? It would allow you to find the most efficient burn for a given transfer time.

Is it still 10-m in diameter? I feel like that might be too small for 418 ton payload especially when assembling hydrogen powered spaceships.

winged_7

With 16 km/s you can also send something to Jupiter and Mercury.

winged_7

For TLI missions you can put entire S-IVB inside a 10-m or 11-m fairing: https://www.reddit.com/r/RealSolarSystem/comments/apbjie/saturn_v_molab_mobile_laboratory/ so the fact that the payload is larger than S-IVB would no longer be a problem.

This is btw. one of the biggest fairngs I've ever used in KSP. 11-m in diameter, 45-m long. You could put entire orbital cabaple rocket inside.

winged_7

What's the point of using S-IVB for LEO insertion? I've used my own Saturn VB MLV (260 t to LEO) to assemble four different interplanetary spaceships and I've never needed to use S-IVB for circularization. 2,5 stage is enough, even 2 stage design is just enough for LEO. Example from real life: Skylab - launched on a two stage variant of Saturn V.

X-3 Onyx is a unmanned missile shaped vehicle designed to break sound barrier with possibly the weakest jet engine while maintaining the properties of a regular plane such as:

-reusability

-landing and takeoff at reasonable speeds (100 m/s)

-decent maneuverability

Loaded weight: 800 kg

Dry weight: 550 kg

Wingspan: 3m

Length: 9m

Powerplant: J-85-GE-4 turbojet - 13 kN

Solved!

The only workaround I've found is to use separate 1.0.5 installation for planes.

winged_7

Procedural Fairings I think.

winged_7

No, it's purely fictional, it's just a part of my small lunar outpost in RP-0.

winged_7

For TLI burns you don't need any tools. Just raise ap, pe to 320 000 km and then make a small intercept burn.

winged_7

Exactly. This is cluster of DSG4 engines from Near future propulsion and it is powered by 2 Rapid L reactors from Near future electrical. Thrust 100 N - power required 4 MW.

I am planning to use ion tugs for unmanned Earth-Moon-Earth transfers - ion tugs can be used basically the same way as container ships on Earth. They're very slow - about 30x slower than passenger jets but the speed is not important for cargo, they're hauling.

Possible applications involve:

  • resupplying very large lunar stations

  • transfering helium-3 towards Earth

Here is a craft I've developed: 125 t ship which can carry 340 t of payload towards the Moon and then return back to LEO using remaining fuel. Only about 64 t of fuel is needed for the whole operation. Transfering the same amount of payload would require 510 t hydrolox upper stage - 7x more fuel.

winged_7

Yes it can rotate, but you have to use Persistent Rotation mod for that. Go to prograde in order to line yourself up, then switch to regular stability hold in order to keep that orientation, also set Earth as a reference like on the picture below:https://i.imgur.com/DtpVJWs.jpg

I started spiral burn from 180 x 180 km orbit and a brief moment later (240 days in game) I was already near escape velocity https://i.imgur.com/1XgyoSP.png

Don't know how to help you with your last question. I've never run into any problem like that.

winged_7

Why you didn't use Persistent Thrust mod? I've just tested it and it allowed me to do 200 day burn within just 20 minutes.

winged_7

They're from Soviet engines mod.

winged_7

I think mass is slightly lower but the difference for that small part would be really negligible (like less than 1-2 kg).
