If you don't know the history of cycling you probably won't know her, but in her preferred discipline of the time trial she was almost unbeatable.

She rode in an era when there were very few opportunities for women to race, particularly internationally, and she was still a legend. In today's environment, who knows what her palmarès would look like.

By way of example, she set an outright record for the distance ridden in twelve hours, overtaking the man who was setting the men's record as she did so.

Her women's record then stood for forty years, only being beaten in 2017.
