The problem is that the ban is unenforceable if you allow AI translation. I've seen this in subreddits: if you carve out ANY exceptions, the AI spammers ALWAYS try and claim it

I'm going to be mean
I think web weenies are completely lost
They are obsessed with 1993 era utopian assumptions about a porous "semantic web" where the world's knowledge could be inevitably organised by a sufficiently detailed metadata record format
They bang on about the origins of the web technology which, by definition, were built by people with no crystal ball on how the web would evolve
The reason modern developers use REST+JSON+React and friends isn't because they are lost and ignorant. It's because they want to use the same API for their webapps as they can use for mobile apps. And to treat the web as just another delivery format over the same backend, rather than a delicate "artisan hypermedia craft" project.

Slight correction - yes, it can play any region, but the video circuitry is set for a specific region (e.g. PAL vs NTSC).
If you mix up the regions on an NTSC (American) TV you will get colour problems, as NTSC uses a timed signal to colour the scanlines

Not on these. They are for QA, not development. They only have 2mb of memory so you would struggle to run a build with debug symbols

Interesting. So you're saying AI is only able to replace 5% of your workforce, is that your argument?
Unless there was another reason perhaps? That this is just an ordinary layoff because you missed your targets, and AI is a figleaf? That couldn't be it, surely?

This is a really interesting comment, because all I have said is - I don't get Nigella's "underdog" treatment - and you have flown off the handle.
yojimbo_beta
Yes? I do think working class people should have the same opportunities? Is this a weird outlier opinion now?
It's not like I resent Nigella on my screen. She's great. I just don't get the weird treatment of her as an underdog
edit:
so? This isnt The Great British Social Mobility
Why am I getting the vibe that you think "people bang on too much about inequality these days"?

Her background as daughter of Nigel Lawson, Chancellor of the Exchequer under Margaret Thatcher; education at a variety of exclusive private schools; beginning her career in journalism when her father's friend Charles Moore invited her to write for the conservative periodical The Spectator.
How do you think you become deputy literary editor at The Times at age 26? Do not tell me it happens on merit, and could just as easily happen to a young working class person.
Nigella is a great person and deserves her success. But she is not self-made.
yojimbo_beta
I don't like it. It feels tense and uncomfortable.
Sometimes on this subreddit it feels like folk resent PH and see Nigella as an underdog
I do like Nigella and her work, but I respect that Paul has actually worked in professional kitchens, starting life at an ordinary comprehensive school.
Nigella is very talented but wouldn't be where she is without her background
I like her, but I don't get why folk want to see her put PH "in his place". I'd rather they got on and kept things nice and breezy

I would consider myself RY once I have enough money to retire at whatever my age is. That's really my only goal in this - to not have to work
yojimbo_beta
Who the fuck is this Roon idiot, anyway?

Hey Chris. I know Go, and I have done some PSX programming, so this intersects on a couple of my interests
Previously I've always done PSX programming in C as that was the lingua franca of the PlayStation
How big is the TinyGo runtime? Memory is really constrained so having the whole machinery for Goroutines and the garbage collector sounds expensive
On that matter, how have you found GC with your PSX projects? Is it much of a problem ?
(I looked at your profile on GH. Seems I already follow you)

This is a GREAT editing technique if your audience is mostly cats or several species of bird

How are you organising your plans? I have found myself actually committing markdown docs with pseudocode - that I work on in tandem with Claude - so that the overall design is more legible to a reviewer
I definitely am more effective now. For example I have been solo implementing a full forward network proxy, despite having no prior real network programming experience. I have taken a bit longer than most as I've used Claude to try and train me on networking.
What's hard is distinguishing people using AI intentionally from those using it lazily. Their outputs look identical, at least at first
yojimbo_beta
I think the skill issue is more confusing implementation / code for the real work of design and architecture. People get hooked on the rate they can pump out KLOC with Fable and forget to have those hard nagging discussions about the end state of their design. That's the biggest issue I'm seeing right now: lots of things that are sound in isolation, but collectively don't add up to a coherent solution

From my limited exploration, I have also found AI tests are better than most human tests
My hypothesis is that human written tests tend to be complete garbage. Most programmers consider tests a chore to get done, not something to think about. The goal is to have a CI step that goes green every commit and stops them getting fired. In addition, tests are hard to write.
So it might be that the median AI driven test is far better than the median handwritten test. Just because AI actually attempts the work.
yojimbo_beta
Yeah, I have also worked at a company that did sales-driven development, now I am at a company that used to do sales driven development but now we're struggling to keep the whole thing running.
People are smart, solutions can and will be found. Don't be such a doomer!
I have worked at 3 companies that were market leaders or even near-monopolists and have lost that position due to engineering dysfunctions.
I don't have a lot of patience for programmers who haven't seen this playing out, lecturing me about the value of Time to Market
yojimbo_beta
Were the tests and metrics also written by AI? If so, how do you know the tests are not performing confirmation bias?
(Which is also a problem with human written code of course. We've all seen shitty unit tests that just assert "the function returns what it returns")

And we only see the Babadook in a children’s book, but never the actual guy.
I thought Amelia (Sam's mother) was the Babadook? It's her all along (or a form of "possession")

Meanwhile Simon from Winchester makes a beef wellington with Kale Sarcophagus and Gregg says "I just don't feel much cooking is going on here"
Meanwhile Su from Basingstoke makes her fifth consecutive curry + rice and walks it into the next round

HL2 has to be very economical with its use of mobs and entities. Remember this is a 20 year old game that came out for Pentium III machines that often didn't even have graphics cards.
When I first played HL2, it was on a shitty Win XP tower PC with 512mb of RAM and it took 2 minutes to load each map.
HL2 has to use a lot of implicit storytelling - scenery, audio, absence - because it was constrained by the hardware of the era

I think it was the "wok-end"

I bought a one bed London flat in 2022. How fucked am I?
I use PhotoPea, also have some mood boards for inspiration, including screen shots of other videos in my niche
