Found in permafrost in Alaska

This is a company I follow on insta that finds mammoth remains, direwolf remains, and other ice age bones and mummies in permafrost. They are using their gold production runoff to spray down the permafrost to thaw out the fossils. Anyways, what do you folks think this prehistoric creature could be? It reminds me of the neonatal raccoons at my wildlife rehab, but I'm not very in-tune to skeletal/mummified ID.

Sidenote- give them a follow they find insane fossils and groundbreaking archeological finds

It looks a lot like rodentia to me.

diancephelon

The long tail, the shape of the paws, it sure looks like a rat

[deleted]

I follow these guys. It's a rodent.I think it was sent off to be looked at.

Pineapple254

I’m seeing a baby squirrel. Curious about this one, especially how long ago it lived!

LaMadreDelCantante

They're melting the permafrost on purpose? How is this not a terrible idea?

WelaraThing

my thoughts exactly…

Aggressive_Smile_944

Me too. I had to go to far down to find this comment. Seriously can't be good.

MaceWinnoob

Yeah the private market makes it worse. People shred through layers of mud out there with just water in order to find mammoths to sell.

Here’s a Vice video from Siberia:

https://youtu.be/REgVkpWkh-o?si=EV6G5OorgTKN55qH

LaMadreDelCantante

This makes me angry. What the hell. It's irreplaceable and if it's "gonna melt anyway" should at least be used for the educational benefit of all mankind. We need international cooperation to stop this like yesterday. Not that we're gonna get it for Siberia presently, unfortunately.

raining_redcaps [OP]

As far as I can tell they're using the runoff from their mining operations and the area they're excavating is melting anyways, they're just speeding it up with water. It might be lmao

mrszubris

Nope. They do it for fossils and hoard them away from science. The guy is a MAGA.whack job.

raining_redcaps [OP]

I actually got blocked on my main account for calling out his racism lmao. I'm in it to see what they discover but I'm definitely not a fan of him. I just wish he hadn't deleted the photos of the ice age horse they defrosted. I didn't get a good enough look at it lol

TheBigSmoke420

For fucks sake, these are unique finds and they’re just defrosting them for insta pics

LaMadreDelCantante

They believe in evolution now?

[deleted]

Doubt it. These are the same people who gave us alternative facts and will tell you that what you obviously see in a video is not what you're seeing but something else entirely. My favorite is the new Epoch times video on Jan 6. They're like find out what really happened! Lol pretty easy to tell what happened theres thousands of hours of video but unfortunately we lack the critical thinking skills to actually know what's happening in the videos we see. Plus "ma gran pa-pa ain no munkey"

LaMadreDelCantante

Still terrible. They need to let it be. Even just waiting for melt and grabbing what's uncovered should be left to science, not for-profit corporations.

Plus if their mining operations are melting permafrost that's not better.

Batherick

Hosing the fossils down with industrial runoff also washes dirt, pollen, and other materials away that could give us clues as to ancient migratory patterns.

It also washes away the saliva of the animal that killed it, making it harder to positively identify who ate/was eaten by what and how.

mrszubris

I actually know this group and told them not to chuck this mummy in a pile. They are incredibly irresponsible with their finds. A friends mom works there and I was able to use enough buzzword bingo to get them to not chuck it.

DDESTRUCTOTRON

Was one of these buzzwords perhaps "not" or "chuck"?

Waverly_Hills

Yeah they’re awful. Actively destroying what could’ve possibly been considered a UNESCO heritage site because they want the mammoth ivory. The main guy has alluded to them having discovered human remains and have not let the proper authorities know which is not only highly illegal under the NAGPRA laws but also unethical to not let the proper people know of a site of archaeological importance for preservation. I’m glad it looks like they’re now working more with accredited experts, but for the longest time they had this vendetta against academia because supposedly the museum of natural history took a bunch of stuff and dumped it into the Hudson River in the 20s. They act like the museum has stayed this way for a hundred years and refused to work with them or really anybody else. If you critique or suggest something on any of their socials, they block you you (why I said it seems because I’ve been blocked since 2020).

Mean-Professional596

Small squirrel or rat I’m convinced, but very interested in seeing what they find out!

loudflower

They’re melting permafrost? And water damages specimens

BackDoorBalloonKnot

I think they collect chunks and then they do the spray down process, but don’t quote me on that I’m not sure but I’ve seen similar for gold mines that run into permafrost

Tacticowl04

Some Type of rodent

Comfortable-Ad-5793

Oh yeah let me just melt all the permafrost I can find can't be a bad idea

That place in Alaska is the most fascinating trove of ice age treasures not being studied right now

Pixichixi

I thought I was in "whatisthisbug" and was absolutely horrified for a minute

scaredpitoco

which company is that?

raining_redcaps [OP]

It's in the pic. They're gold miners and they also excavate any fossils etc they find as like a by product to mining. (At least that's what I've gathered) they're a bit sketchy

[deleted]

Yes from what OP wrote they sound dodgy af??

I’d suggest reading the full description of the post as we can’t fully see it, there is probably more info there.

raining_redcaps [OP]

Nope, they sent it off for lab work, that's all the post says. That's why I posted here

Wii_wii_baget

Ah ok. Looks like a rat or squirrel. I remember having a day where my dad and I peeled dead rats off paintings to clean them (the paintings not rats) some of the rats were so old that their fur and entire body melted and glued the skeleton onto the painting. Looks likes like one of the rats. Idk why I’m not more traumatized by this.
