... wasn't this a story in Nintendo Power? Funny that we thought of the same thing.
It was a display piece at the new york nintendo store.

Was? Is it not there anymore? I swear I saw it the last time I went there.
If memory isn't fooling me, it was removed from display one or two months ago. Don't know why, tho.
They recently put it back out. They are rotating exhibits due to space limitations is what I told
Yeah I think I read it was "retired" not too long ago.
Wonder if some employee knocked it over by accident and it broke? 💀
No I doubt it, the retirement was announced in advance IIRC
Don't touch it, don't even clean it, put it in a shadow box
I wish I could keep it but I don't have other GBC to play... so I'm gonna replace the shell. But I'll put burned shell in a shadow box I promise.
They re cheap enough on ebay bud, grab a broken one and IPS is, new shell, battery mod ect, have a new version for playing today and keep that one for history
That's so cool but unfortunately, ebay isn't common in Japan and those stuffs are hard to get or expensive🥲
Have you tried one of the many second hand shops or Mercari?
Where in japan are you? Maybe I can help you. I’d even buy that gameboy from you, if you want to use the funds to buy a new one. Please don’t restore it. This Gameboy has a story to tell!
I didn't know that those are sold on Mercari. I'm gonna think about it. I live in Kanagawa but I'm sorry I cannot sell even if it is burned off. This GBC was my cousin's and gave it to me before he's gone.
Ah I moved from kanagawa prefecture in December. You could try one of those wattmann shops. I bought some Gameboy there (as defective to fix - pretty cheap!).
And yes: Mercari has Gameboy colors. Sometimes even fully nodded.
I understand tough. Treasure that gameboy. I’m sorry for your loss!
Hit up a Hard Off or secondhand shop and ask if they have any junk/for parts GBCs available. They’ll probably have a ton in the back and will sell them to you for cheap because the console is dead.
Bestie their room just got lit on fire their first priority probably isn’t replacing their GBC 😭
But posting about it in reddit is?
Buying a new GBC costs money, posting on Reddit doesn’t. If everything in my room was burned (presuming it was a big fire) I’d be more focused on replacing my Bed, Dresser, Desk, TV, anything that I’d use more often than a GBC.
You must have obviously missed my very first comment where I suggested that he preserve it then (you know, costing nothing) or did you just skip past that to the part where I said he should get another one for future use? 🙄
You don’t have to get all hostile about it, all I’m saying is that I don’t think their top priority should be getting a new one lol. Preserving it is a good idea ofc, but idk how viable getting a new one with the expense of replacing their things would be.
I wouldn't even reshell it. It's a trophy now.
Sounds nice. I wish I could keep it but this gbc is the only one I own. I'm gonna replace to play comfortably.
Is buying another out of the question?
That's the idea but I'm a college student and I don't have much money. It's getting expensive to get GBC in japan.
What about just getting the screen replaced? Buttons and all look fine, and replacing the screen would let you see it normally again. Would it be all right to play that way?
Nintendium is no joke.
Yeah, back in the day consoles were built to last
It's the Game Boy legend again. I heard about it during the Gulf War. As expected, I would like to say that the most important thing about the fire is that you are safe, but I would like to do something to clean up the Game Boy Color that I worked so hard on. But first of all, I'm glad you're safe ☺️
Are you from Japan? That's proper Japanese😦! I see, aroma candles? I also use a kerosene stove, so it's not someone else's problem. 20-year-old! You look young! Hey, you and your Game Boy are about to start 🙂! I'm not very knowledgeable about it, but if it works that well, I think it's okay just to replace the exterior. . No, it would be better to ask someone who knows more about it, because I would be irresponsible. Most importantly, your body is safe. That’s the best☺️ Both you and the Game Boy can try again as many times as you like ☺️ Don't get discouraged! Just a little bit at a time, so move forward☺️
100% a Sturdy fella! Definitely worthy of a good restoration and a new speaker in the least :)
Clean it inside and out and take it apart if you can/feel comfortable to clean out the crap in it, then keep it the way it is. Has some nice unintentional aesthetic going on and the screen is fairly intact so still playable.
All and all you could always slap an ips inside of it perhaps but I question if it could even fit with part of the corner looking p burnt?
This reminds me of that game boy that survived the gulf war
It just goes to show that the GBC has the same build quality that allowed one to survive a bomb blast in the 1990s Gulf War.
They just don't make them like they used to
Aww man this sucks, sorry bout the house fire
And tilt n tumble survived too thankfully that game rules lol
It has got the Power.
Those consoles never let us down as kids and still deliver today. I’d clean inside and leave it as is. A permanent reminder.
Good idea. By the way, the cause of fire is scented candles. This will remind me not to use scented candles anymore.
That's because it's the goat! The goat!
That's incredibile! Nokia 3310 of gaming🤣
I wish I kne what Kirby joke I could say here...
What a trooper! Does the speaker still work too?
Actually, nope. Seems not work... I need to replace it new one
That thing definitely deserves some upgrades now. But don't throw the old shell/screen away, make a display item from it.
I got that. That will always remind me not to fire scented candles at late night.
I have an OEM shell in the same color I can send you. It's missing a battery cover but it has all the buttons and membranes.
I saw a working gameboy that survived 9/11. It was half melted, but they say it still turned on & played games. It was in a museum in Washington DC when I went in 8th grade
That's amazing. I wish I could visit there.
I like how GBs can survive almost anything even more than 30 years later
It was my cousin's and he gave it to me. Then years later I messed up🫠
I'm curious if any games also survived. Yknow apart from the one in the brick itself
This is the perfect candidate for upgrades.
Sorry about the fire but cool to the the gameboy survived.
To those saying don't touch it, a house fire isn't necessarily something everyone wants a momento from. It's a traumatic event. I'd be putting that thing in a new shell, personally. After my insurance company paid me for a new one, of course.
Impressive. Sorry for your loss.
You should definitely keep it like that, clean it of course

I wouldn't clean it at all. It's much cooler to have a display piece like this that tells a story, than to have a perfect gameboy like everyone else has.
Yoosulis 30 points · Feb 2024
I think keeping the shell would be cool but definitely moving the Gameboy into a new similar shell, if that was my and only Gameboy color ofc
[deleted] 27 points · Feb 2024
It has the same vibe as that one GB that is in a museum because it survived a bomb.
Suspicious_Dingo_426 5 points · Feb 2024
It's less crispy though.
Conscious-Bottle143 9 points · Feb 2024
It's already melted so just clean the ash off.
[deleted] 6 points · Feb 2024
Oh he should absolutely clean it, that ash is legitimately hazardous (probably several kinds of carcinogenic).
_RexDart 5 points · Feb 2024
Bud... Cleaning the dust and ash would not make this even close to "perfect" or "like everyone else"
