TIL I'm an idiot.
...And the guy who sold it to me probably is too. I bought this red japanese 3ds 2+ years ago, I found it in a junk bin at Portland Retro Gaming Expo (edit: $50), the screen had big scratches in the bottom, the dpad is peeling, and it was originally missing its thumb stick.
So today I was lamenting my scratched digitizer at work, and how I already ordered a new one but it's going to take a while to come. I was poking around at the bottom screen when i notice the corner move. wtf? there's an incredibly tiny gap, about the size of a hair on one edge of the "digitizer". YUP! I had a SCREEN PROTECTOR on for over 2 years, and the guy who sold it to me likely didn't notice that it was there either. The screen is PRISTINE underneath and the edges were just slightly dirty. I'm still in shock.

of note is that this is actually great news to me because I hate changing a digitizer, and I'm never going to scratch this screen myself, and have never scratched a DS family screen in my life.

Same, I have multiple DS and 3DS systems, none of their touchscreens have been scratched over their long lives. As long as you can close a system like a DS when not in use, I really don't see the need for a protector. 👍

Meanwhile theres me as a kid making my ds touchscreen unusable by playing pokemon ranger with opened scissors because i lost or broke like 5 styluses. Ive learned since then lol

By chance, when you were a kid, were you also the hulk? How in the good goddamn do you break 1 DS stylus, let alone 5, those things are sturdy!

Out of my own experience I can say: Chewing. I chewed my DS lite ones to death as a kid. I never had a working one.

I've still got my launch ds lite still in pristine condition. Honestly all my stuff is in top shape. Just gotta take care of your things.

Only handheld I’ve had the screen scratched up on wasn’t even me doing it. Let a younger kid who was put next to me use it (cause put the unaccompanied minor who’s under ten with the only other person close to their age on the plane….. the teenager traveling alone that makes sense right??) He was an absolute wreck and kinda a menace if I’m being honest and I could physically SEE the flight attendants hitting the end of their rope so I let the kid watch me play on my ds for a while, which quieted him down, until I got tired and wanted to take a nap. Kid about blew a gasket when I told him that and there was a tantrum of epic proportions brewing and after about the 10th whiny please asking if he could use it while I take a nap ‘since you aren’t using it anyways!’ I finally gave in and told him to be careful. Yeah…. Come to find out he’d lost my styler and instead of telling me he asked one of the attendants for something and they gave him a PEN, luckily didn’t work anymore, he didn’t use the nib of the pen but it did More than enough damage, not a fun thing to wake up to, especially since I was on the way to my grandmothers and she lived in the middle of nowhere to the point you took a left out of town towards her house and you didn’t even get radio anymore, you literally fell off the face of the earth, Meaning there was no way for me to even Think of getting it fixed before I went home. The apologies and thank yous from the flight attendants weren’t Nearly enough let me tell you, Especially since none of them would tell me who gave the kid the pen meaning I couldn’t get them to pay to fix it.

Somebody never played Elite Beat Agents or Pokemon Ranger!!
Shifty-Imp 2 points · Jul 2026
Joke's on you, I played both of those games multiple times and even 100%d EBA. Guess I'm just not a brute. 😝
It's really not that hard to not break your console...

As a fellow tinkerer of the Nintendo 3ds, I ask what about replacing the bottom screen is a hassle? For me personally I hate replacing any part the requires me to access the top section as un-coiling and re-coiling the ribbon cable in the hinge is always a nightmare and always drags the time I spend on it

anything related to a layer that goes above the screen (like digitizer or lens) drives me nuts because i'm a perfectionist about not leaving any specs underneath

The forbidden "pencil" method of stylus.

What's a digitiser? And how do you change the screen? The middle of mine is quite scratched. Not awful, but enough to make me try to be careful around it
septumfunk-com [OP] 1 points · Jul 2026
the digitizer is the piece of plastic that sits on top of the screen and senses pressure for touch. that's why you can feel the screen move down a hair when you touch on 3ds. it's stuck to the top of the screen with adhesive and is actually a separate part, so you can just take it off and put a new one on top of the same screen
septumfunk-com [OP] 1 points · Jul 2026
because the ds family (and wii u game pad) use pressure sensitive digitsers for their screen, thats why they can only work with one touch point at a time. modern touch screens like the switch and your phone are capacitive and have a layer that senses conductive surfaces with electricity (like human fingers, water, and special made styluses). that is why you can touch a 3ds with anything but not your phone
SpiderSixer 1 points · Jul 2026
Oooh okay. How do you change that?
septumfunk-com [OP] 1 points · Jul 2026
you basically just peel off the old one, then clean up the area where it sticks and put in a new one. it's like a sticker. requires disassembling the console fully though
