I am a Hotel Housekeeper, AMA

Proof: Hotel Housekeeper Shirt

My daughter works as a hotel housekeeper and maintenance person at a hotel. She is sitting next to me, but I can type faster than her. Ask Me Anything and I will post her responses.

Would you sleep in a room you've cleaned knowing what you know?

winkleb [OP]

Yes. I did it because at the time, I trusted the housekeepers I worked with. I don't know if I would do it now. It depends on who is cleaning the rooms that day.

Why don't you keep plungers in the hotel bathrooms?

winkleb [OP]

I don't know. That is actually a good question. The only reason I can think of is because it would be considered unsanitary.

From hotel maintenance. They take plungers. And even though I trust most with a plunger, it's a tool, and I would give it to those who would seem to use it as intended and not to the absent minded lady who has three young children in the room.

Long story short, I'll plunge it, the toilets are made to take most things, I need to know if a foreign object is in the piping, etc. it'll take five minutes and I don't care about the fact that you poo'd, we all poo, that's why there's a toilet in every room.

Longer story short: my plunger... Mine.

How long have you been a hotel housekeeper? What is the most valuable item you have found left behind by a customer? Most disgusting item left behind by a customer? Craziest story, that you can share?

Thank you

For a year and a half or 2 years. A brand new IPhone. Used condoms. A man screaming hysterically at the top of his lungs how we lied about having a fitness center. We actually do, but it was under construction. Unless you want the lady who was drunk and face planted in the hotel lobby. Or the drunk lady we found passed out, outside the hotel. Or how we got robbed at gun point. Just a few she can think of now.

EDIT: Spelling.

Did you give the iPhone back?

winkleb [OP]

Yes. We have a 90 day lost and found policy. If a guest leaves something in the room we put it in lost and found. If they come back to claim it or call and asked to have it mailed to them we will do that. If they don't claim it, which ever housekeeper found the item gets to keep it. This includes items or money.

Your occupation sounds kinda. Um. Interesting......

Some days are a bit more fun than others.

What's the biggest tip anyone's ever left you?

winkleb [OP]

I personally have only received a $5.00 tip. One guest was generous and left a $10 tip each day for the housekeeper this last week, but I wasn't cleaning rooms. Other than that the highest known tip was $6.60.

What is the most random and crazy thing you have ever walked in on/found left behind in a room? Have you ever witnessed other housekeepers eat food left behind from people who have checked out?

winkleb [OP]

1.) The random thing was a bouquet of flowers and unused condoms. (The guy was prepared but the girl turned him down.) Most random was a giant dog. 2.) I know they have but I have never witnessed it. It was pizza that was left over. Usually things are thrown away unless it is unopened then housekeeping gets to take it home.

B4DILLAC

Haha wow I think you might have one of the most interesting jobs I've heard on here.

Has she ever found a dead person? Oddest note/request from a guest?

winkleb [OP]

1.) No dead bodies. 2.) The oddest notes left for housekeepers were bible passages. Hotel guests often let their kids leave thank you notes for the housekeepers. Oddest request is not to make the bed or change the bedding when they stayed for an extended amount of time. They said they would tend to it themselves.

I clean cabins on ships and I love when passengers ask not to have their beds made. One less thing for me to do =P

No. But I will add that there is a guest that did hit on every female staff member we had until he finally got lucky and that person was not me.

How much do you get paid? I worked as a housekeeper (Hampton In ) in 2005, when I was 15 years old, and I got $7.50 hourly, starting. I quit after a few months. Fast forward to 2011 and a girl I know working at the same exact hotel was getting $8.50 starting. I was so disturbed by how little the wages had increased.

Also, do you leave tips when you stay in hotels now? I always leave $5-$15 along with a note about how I appreciate their hard work.

winkleb [OP]

When she started she was getting paid $7.50. She started out at a small Hampton Hotel. When she stays at a hotel she will leave the housekeeper a tip. Hampton guests almost always left a tip. Now that she works for a different hotel, the guests vary rarely leave tips.

cuntingseason

What year did she start? I ask because it just seems crazy that in 2005 I got $7.50 and the wage hasn't risen much

winkleb [OP]

She is still at this same hotel even though it was bought out by another chain. She only does housekeeping when they need her to fill in, she holds another position (which doesn't pay any better than a housekeeper) She has been there about 2 and a half years now.
