3 year contract...Galaxy Nexus...are you on Bell?

[deleted]

[deleted]

Ah...yeah, that's why people saying "just buy whenever you want, there's always a better phone around the corner" is complete bullshit. There are definitely certain times of year when it's valuable to wait a month or two if you can. Of course, if you have a broken phone or something else like that happens, it's sometimes unavoidable.

Nah, I told him that I thought it was cool, and nothing really ever came from it. It's not the most exciting ending, so you can pretend he threw me out the window or something.

I switched away from the Nexus S to a Nexus 4 a year ago... am I doing it right?

evilf23

the nexus 5 came out end of october, so if you waited 6 weeks you could have had that. But you probably got the N4 for $200 when they did the price drop to clear inventory. at least i hope you did. if not then you just DP'ed yourself.

Dirigibleduck

But you probably got the N4 for $200 when they did the price drop to clear inventory.

That I did! Here's hoping that the Nexus 4 lasts me as long as the S did.

I'm in the same boat. I got a Galaxy Nexus from Verizon because I wanted a pure Android experience. It's running Shiny Rom, 4.4.4 and still going strong. My only real complaint is it will slow down at times and the battery is atrocious. Outside of that...I am counting down the days until my contract is up in February and I can move to the Moto X.

tooyoung_tooold

I got an anker 2200 mah battery off amazon for $7 I think for my gnex. It took my screen on time from about 2hour to 3hours. It may only sound like an hour but it made a huge difference and was cheap as crap. Highly recommend.

Old devices make great XBMC or Roku remotes. They can also be used as MP3 players with Subsonic, Pandora, Google Music, etc.

Muniosi_returns

MP3 player

I've always wondered, what's the appeal of this? Can't you just use your current phone?

viagraeater

It lasts a long time on battery since you can turn all the antennas off. You don't deplete the battery on your main device.

turdbogls

I use my old phone as an MP3 player for when I'm working out in the yard. its pretty sandy here, so I dont want any of that sand to get on my new phone, so I just use my old phone that I care not of. if it gets scratched, dropped, kicked, run over by the mower, I really dont care.

My Galaxy Nexus is currently the bathroom gaming console(s).

I've used my older phone to make a wifi webcam.

dutch_gecko

Could you give specific instructions for this? What software did you use?

kokesh

Mine is has 2.3.whatever, so I am using this one. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.itest24.wirelesswebcam&hl=en It saves the image to built-in server, I than point my router to the phone using NAT to specific port.

Snoopyalien24

Another way is to download AirDroid and make a free account so you can sign into it from anywhere you have an internet connection and a PC. In the web UI, you click on camera, and boom, you see what you point the camera to.

Dashcam?

Nix-geek

I tried really hard to make my OG Droid into a dash cam, and it kind of worked. Expect for the random reboots. Expect for the 'turn it on and wait for it to boot up'.

It works, but it was a huge pain in the ass. I just opted for a $60 real one, and now it just sits there as a desk clock. and even just doing that, it still reboots.

TheyCallMeRINO

Have you found a good clock-radio app that streams radio stations (as opposed to just playing the same MP3 library all the time)? I've been using TimeTuner for this on my iPhone ... but I just had a Galaxy gifted to me, and thought that might be one possible use case.

I use my HTC Magic as a space taker in my drawer. It sits there and I just check from time to time that it takes enough space in there.

More seriously, I used to think I could convert an old Android smartphone in a music player but having tried a few times with the HTC Magic and an Xperia Mini (very small and light), I can tell you than nothing beats a SansaClip with Rockbox. Its tiny, light, cheap, has a massive battery and with physical buttons which is great for using it without looking. Turning a smartphone into a MP3 player sounds like a great idea but really isn't.

JesterRaiin

I usually wipe clean every device I don't need anymore, install whatever newest and lightest custom ROM is currently available for that model and leave it in poorer "district" of my city near places where poor kids hang out.

There's always a sticky note saying something along the lines "My old owner left me for a newer model, because I'm too slow. I'm worth next to nothing and can't play newest games, but I can browse Internet and do many other things. Please take care about me or find someone who could use me. Thanks and bless you." + sad face.

In case of phones I added fresh prepaid sim card. There's also a charger and, if possible, earphones. To this day I released a few tablets, "smart"phones and such. I don't know what happened to them, but I'm 99% sure that I saw some kid using what looked like one of my 7'' tablets a few months ago.

I know, I know, cheesy, cliche but hey, that's me.

Edit: Guys, this comment was gold awarded but I don't think it should be. This whole "liberation" of stuff isn't something very demanding, and I usually have craploads of fun doing it, so it's not that big deal. Still, thanks to whoever did that!

[deleted]

I hope. The idea that my device still serves some purpose is kind of... I don't know... Heartwarming. ;]

Yes, there are such organizations and when possible my wife and I help them but we also gather some clothes, toys, food and give away to poorer people on our own, or simply leave them in random locations in hope that someone in need will get them.

I think that organized help is good, but random acts are needed too...

MakeYouThink

I saved this. Right now, I'm seventeen and just beginning to design apps. Somewhere in the future, I hope to be in a position that allows me to have excess phones that I can give to strangers,

JesterRaiin

Hint: your friends or relatives will want to replace their old stuff with a new one. You could ask them to give it to you instead of throwing it away or, I don't know, selling for 10$. I'm sure they'll be happy to do that when they'll hear about the possibility to help someone less fortunate by... doing practically nothing. ;]

formermormon

Right, so ... dedicated porn device. Just not you personally. Proxy fapping.

WastingOurYouth

That's an incredibly admirable thing to do. Damn good job man.

JesterRaiin

Thanks! When I was young, we weren't very rich, budget was tight, so I valued every toy I got no matter how small. I simply hope that at least a few kids got my old devices and feel like I did back then. ;]

mechakreidler

Meanwhile other people using them as vibrators. Love your idea though! I ended up mailing mine to a friend that then mails it and a bunch of other stuff off to the Philippines ;) Not as personal as your idea though, that's pretty cool.

My Nexus 7 (2012) is sitting in the charging dock having been re-purposed as a digital picture frame.

logantauranga

App testing.

I can always ask friends to try stuff out, buy they usually have recent/popular models which don't tend to present many problems.

I hang on to the following phones that are past their prime:

iClone running Ice Cream Sandwich, 4" screen (no GPS or 3G)
Optimus 2X running MIUI, 4" screen (cracked screen)
An Alcatel running Gingerbread, 3.5" screen (got it free with carrier credit)

There's also an iPhone 3GS which is good to check websites for compatibility.

gonemad16

yup i use all my old devices as test devices / music players

fallenheero

You can use it as a baby monitor or as a portable way to check out CCTV cameras. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sleekbit.dormi&hl=en

You could also use it as a mini chrome cast if it has video out and use something like AllCast or cheap cast.

Also Spotify allows you to control other devices running spottily so you could hook it up to a set of speakers and just control what song is playing from your phone.

bo_knows

When I finally retire my GNex, I'm totally getting an IP Camera to use it as a baby monitor.

I have an old HTC Sensation whose charging port went out on me and was unable to be repaired by my local repair shop. It could have easily been set aside as a paper weight, but I didn't see it that way. I hardwired it to an appropriate power supply and installed a bare bones CM10 ROM. It's now a permanent Chromecast remote for my living room.

[deleted]

I throw them in the "I think I'll need this" bin. And there they go to die.

HydrophobicWater

You can turn it into a PirateBox

edit:

PirateBox is a DIY anonymous offline file-sharing and communications system built with free software and inexpensive off-the-shelf hardware.

Got an old Dell Streak 5 here, using the giant screen as a living room clock now.

It's surprisingly effective, just leave it plugged into a USB port near by and BAM, expensive clock.

Vibrator.

NikkiBug96

I'm sure there are people who think you're just kidding, but this is really true. My old retired Nexus One (which I finally replaced with a Nexus 5 when it came out) has taken a lot of falls down staircases and doesn't do much anymore. I got my N1 when it first came out, when I was 14, and it's in the condition you'd expect a smartphone used by a 14-year-old girl for four years to be in. The camera is broken, speakers and headphone jack don't work, and it's generally just an ugly piece of shit. I could put it on eBay and it might sell for maybe $5. The only good thing about it is that rooting it got me up to 4.4.2, which is nice.

But that thing has a rock-solid vibrator. I don't know why HTC gave the vibrator a motor that could power a tank, but that thing has horsepower that takes me from 0 to 60 in no time flat. I don't even use my actual vibrator anymore because the N1 is better as a vibrator than the standalone vibrator. Plus if I'm going on a trip, I can throw my N1 in my suitcase and I won't be embarrassed if security finds an old phone (they found my vibrator once going through security at an airport and it was embarrassing; I don't give a shit if they find a phone). And it's the only vibrator (that I know of) that can be recharged with a USB connector, so my backup charger can power it, which is pretty cool for camping trips.

TL;DR: Four years ago, my parents bought me a vibrator with a web browser in it and I didn't realize this until a few months ago.

cmykevin

Sorry it took me so long to respond, but one of my hands was occupied...

anyone ever successfully hooked an old phone up to a hard drive for a NAS setup? i have a router with a USB port for NAS but it for some reason fails to index the entire drive. It's not a big deal but i have a few old drives i would like to setup with old hardware gathering dust.

I have a Pantech Burst which I put Paranoid Android on and the most basic of apps (mainly Google Play) and I have an app called Perk TV which allows you to view videos and than you earn points which can be used to redeem gift cards. I have it connected to my work Wi-Fi so it cycles these videos throughout the work day. Every 4 hours a pop-up comes up to verify I am still watching. At this rate I get a $5 Amazon gift card every two weeks which equates to about a $130 per year. Not much put I don't really pay anything to get it.

[deleted]

My Galaxy Nexus is mounted in my car and I use Tasker profiles to automate a tethering connection to my phone and to connect to my car via bluetooth. I use the device as an MP3 player in the car or playing music through Google Music or Pandora, Google Maps (navigation) and ODB2 with Torque. On long trips I've even used it to play some movies that I've seen a million times that I don't really have to pay attention to much like Office Space, Forrest Gump, The Big Lebowski, etc.

Miraclefish

I have an old Galaxy S4 that I use as a portable media centre. 1080p output over HDMI, MicroSD card and a monster battery. Torrents go straight to it via wifi, it has Netflix and countless other media and music apps.

That thing can go for ten hours playing videos through any TV be that hotel, a party, work, wherever.

DrDerpberg

I use my Nexus S as a podcast player at the gym or when I run. I don't want to sweat all over my pretty Nexus 5 and fry it.

Matvalicious

I wanted to use my HTC Legend for that purpose, but I can't cope with the fact it's so unbearably slow. It takes minutes to find and load a song.

Mavamaarten

Hey, I had a HTC Legend too! If you get an Android 4.2 rom and overclock it to 800Mhz it runs quick enough for music.

"Who needs waterproof smartphones?"

There you have it folks. While most of you won't go diving with your device it's still a huge convenience to know that fluids won't damage your phone whatsoever.

Messy, but works.

How do you charge the phone? I'm thinking about doing this with my Qi charger but to me that's kind of a waste of a wireless charger.

Could you expand on this one a bit more?

I use my old Motorola triumph as a permanent alarm clock in the bedroom. I put the latest cyanogenmod (9 maybe) that I could get on there at the time. It put me into Android 4 territory in the Google Play Store, which let my wife choose from a bunch of alarm clocks until she found the one she likes best. It's also great for checking for school closings (snow), receiving emergency storm warnings, and playing mood music when the massage table comes out (not really convenient as a general music player though).

unfoldRS

Use it as a chromecast remote for plex, netflix etc.

HotterRod

Arduinos have very low memory and not much processing power, so when they're doing something like controlling LED strips it's customary to have something like a Raspberry Pi doing the image processing and then the Arduino just renders the pixels. This post makes me wonder if an Android would be just as good for that role?

Edit: Or just use an IOIO board to connect to hardware without the Arduino go-between.

JeTJL

Yep thats.possible, you just need an otg cable.

HD_piss_jugs

I have had many jobsite/construction radios that are inadequate or just don't last. I'm going to build a rolling 18" x 18" x 3' tall audio station from plywood. I have wheels from a golf caddy, a 120volt a/c to 12v d/c converter from a motor home, a 8" subwoofer, a couple of amps and some full range speakers (all car audio stuff). The power supply will go in the bottom, the the sub on top of that, then amps the full range speakers with a fan to move some air through. I'm looking for a way to put a clear cover over my Galaxy SIII that will be used a a head unit. Cant wait to start this project.
