Got my laptop hooked up to my CRT!

Got some emulators running on my computer over the past week and was curious if my laptop could connect to my tv smoothly. Happy to report the experiment was successful!

Thank you! I'm quite proud of myself and forever grateful to have a laptop from 2015 that runs like a dream after giving it an SSD and using Linux.

Fr that shit annoys be so much, the post will literally just be someone using their CRT and having fun but the top comment is usually some fun police mf tryna be "informal" by saying everything in their setup is wrong and you actually need this and this setting and all that

Great setup op happy you're putting that TV to good use 🙏

birbhorse

in all fairness, there are setups that can do better than this.

but if OP doesn't care, then more power to them, i care because i'm a nerd lol. it's okay to not be perfect about everything,

terrymcguinness

I think it’s neat

nissan_al-gaib

Sick! What's the monitor and how did you connect it?

toopyferris

Cool! Nice setup. What operating system are you running on your laptop, and what emulators? Also what are the specs of your laptop

DeviantPost [OP]

OS is Linux kubuntu, using dolphin for game cube and wii and flycast for dreamcast. I don't know my laptop specs, I'd have to check. All I know I'd I got it in 2015 and it runs much smoother with an SSD and Linux lol.

Hell yeah! To quote a wise dog, "That's groovy. Who needs someone telling you what to do all the time?"

Also, as a person with way too many VHS tapes, I'm enjoying the cameo your collection makes here :)

FidoMan1498

Aside from the adapter artifacts, that’s a nice setup. I think this is the way to play the games from the CRT days emulated. CRTs make them look better than they do on modern LCDs. I lwk wish I had a CRT to plug my Wii into.

Blutryforce762

You're better off using a modded Wii if you want to digitally play Gamecube games on your CRT.

DeviantPost [OP]

I don't have a wii nor the means to buy one right now, thank you for the suggestion tho :)

Blutryforce762

Ah, I didn't realize you had a Gamecube already, my bad. You could instead get a Pico Loader off AliExpress and install it into your GC, which doesn't require any soldering.

Also, I recommend asking around on here about the diagonal stripes on your TV. Hopefully they can be fixed with a well-shielded Coaxial/Antenna cable.

Just stop

InvictvsNox

No bc I'm curious about that striping as well.

I wonder what in the signal chain is causing that?

And don't feed me BS about "he likes it, it's fine" because that would've driven me crazy as a kid and made me want to investigate too.

MyGuitarGentlyBleeps

Just stop, too. If he likes it who cares. You go ahead and fixate on some shit while others enjoy themselves.

InvictvsNox

I literally am.

No shit

You can get a Wii for like $70 right now. 😂

septumfunk-com

$70? if i paid $70 for a fucking wii id ask that anyone who truly loves me puts me down. the most i've paid for a wii is 40 bucks because it was a red one 😂

_Sanctum_

When's the last time you checked the price of a Wii on the used market? $70 is more than reasonable for a Wii in good condition with all the cables, a Wii remote etc.

Almsivi

Why? Dolphin is pretty mature as an emulator and there is more versatility with this isn't there?

Blutryforce762

The problem isn't with Dolphin itself. The problem is more the fact that all HDMI to RCA adapters are poorly made, as they introduce a lot of visual artifacts, have a bad quality 480i signal (which is especially horrible for any console that natively outputs 240p) and they also introduce a fair amount of latency too, making them really bad for gaming.

That's why I recommended the Wii instead; It has a native Composite output, can run emulators (except N64 games) in their native resolution of 240p and you can also install a video player onto it, which is useful for watching old TV shows and movies on a CRT.

Installing an ODE into a Gamecube (like the Pico Boot or CubeODE) is also a good option, the only limitation is that it isn't too good at playing TV shows and movies, due to the Gamecube's lack of RAM, compared to the Wii.

You can get a Wii from any Goodwill for dirt cheap and it won't require any more money.

Not what I wrote, that's for sure!

To get it running like OP has it.

Context clues, jesus lol

A Picoloader off AliExpress would cost even less, since the OP already has a Gamecube.

InvictvsNox

Ya if you wanna wait months to get it lol

Do you really think OP gives a shit?

I give a shit. You give a shit. Doesn't mean everyone does or has to.
