I used to not hide it, until some asshole followed me to a subreddit that’s mostly kids and started spamming about how I “masturbate to one of the characters”, which I never even said. It’s safest for people with obscure identities to hide it.

Im not saying this is your case but I used to check because way too often you saw people saying "well I'm progressive but..." Or "well I'm queer but..." And then you checked their history and they were just very clearly lying so it was useful in identifying bad actors.
Often you saw someone saying something sus, then you checked and they frequented nazi adjacent subs.
Checking if someone is being honest saves me time and effort arguing with someone who's only there to rage bait and make the world a worse place.
