Productive use of anxiety

Hi all!

I have been talking about this a lot in comments and responses for a long time on this sub. A lot of people are stressed about “toxins”, pollutants, contaminants, etc.

And a lot of people’s response seems to be to try to research the fuck out of things to try to escape those exposures….

But I think we’d be better served working together to make the world safer for all kids not just kids who have parents with the resources (time, energy, money) to get “clean” items. And the reality is that we are all sharing the air.

So I’m hoping people can share ideas here for that. Is there a petition to sign? A law coming up that might help/hurt? Please share.

I love this idea! I do think that consumer pressure is important - voting with our dollars and reaching out to tell companies that we want them to stop using certain chemicals (as opposed to just not purchasing the products that use them).

For example - I refrained from buying a new pair of rock climbing shoes the other day because they contain PFAS. I emailed the company to ask if they are planning on phasing out their use and if any of their other shoes are PFAS free.

Yes! Sorry this is an older comment that i’m only seeing now but I just responded to a consumer activism comment.

I think that contacting the companies is key in this kind of response. :)

If you’re in the US, many environmental groups work in this area and can keep you updated on federal and state laws/regulations that need support from the public. These are often called water and toxins campaigns. To my knowledge the Sierra Club and NRDC work on it, but there are likely local organizations in many places. Moms Clean Air Force might also have resources on actions to take for parents and families.

I love the idea of getting more involved in this!!

I’m actually not American but I know a lot of redditors are (and they have a big effect on us all!) so it’s great to have ideas shared.

I subscribe to a few groups that send me different petitions and actions. It’s not environment specific but environment stuff comes up sometimes. :)

Consumer activism is a thing,  the more companies see a market for healthier and sustainable goods the more they make them. Petitions seem less effective to me

I have to say I am underwhelmed by consumer activism!

I think that it has spurred a ton of greenwashing but not real improvements in the things available or consumed by the average person. I don’t have hard facts on the matter though so I could be wrong.

I actually think that action mandating stricter controls of what can be sold (and what can be pumped into the air and water) is the answer but there’s no harm in doing both.

I think most people here are doing the form of voting with their wallets already.
