I'm a life insurance agent and all of these people saying buy a term policy don't understand that term coverage has a very low rate of paying out (around 3%). It's like renting insurance, it falls off after 10/20/30 years and after that time you no longer have it. It's cheaper but it's temporary.

Whole Life is locked in at the age you get it set up. It's guaranteed to pay out when you die as long as you have an active policy. Don't worry much about the building cash value, which is based on the premiums you pay, so for example, if you paid $50/mo, that's $600 at the end of one year, that would be what you could borrow from your policy's cash value.

Life insurance isn't for you, it's for your loved ones when you die. Everyone's situation is different but I recommend Whole Life for most people I speak with because it's guaranteed to pay no matter when/how you die.
