It's unusual and I think it's unfair of the theater even if the intent might be good.There's a reason this scenario isn't common. If you want to audition for other things, you're in a limbo of not knowing if you're actually in this show or not. This also allows the theater to keep a waiting pool of people they actually rejected on the line to call in at a moment's notice if someone drops out so that they can still do their show with no inconvenience to them and without the fuss of actually casting and preparing understudies. It's a win/win for them but likely to have only disadvantages for you. I agree that you should let them know if a role doesn't open by XYZ date, you'll be moving on or just flat out thank them and tell them to break a leg and you'll see them next time.

We can't tell you what your rehearsal schedule would be like. There have been thousands of productions of this play and it's not like they all rehearse Monday-Thursday 6:00-8:30 or something. If you're worried about the commitment, ask the director.

Yeah most people get roles they didn't audition for?? Lots of people audition for the big parts but only one person can get each of them, so other people get smaller roles they often weren't actively trying for.

Calling the kids beautiful ones and going into your whole life story for high schoolers is too much. A 16 year old does not care where you and your siblings went to school.

The Seattle show was a few days before my 38th birthday and a friend and I took a road trip up from PDX for an overnight to see it. I wasn't drunk, but did sort of almost take my eye out with my eyeliner pen an hour before and spend the first half of the show in abject pain.
