I’m not just talking about the us (I’m not even from there), and I also don’t mean that voting for one of those parties means you can’t be friends with te other. Just that if you hold a certain political belief that can be a valid reason to not be friends with someone. Gay and women’s rights are still political, even if that’s a core value thing
curiouscollecting
Well technically that first paragraph agrees with my point, no? It affects your friendships. Not becoming friends with someone in the first place is also impact. I also agree with your last part.
curiouscollecting
Genuine question, you think not being friends with racists is the same as being racist? Or am I misunderstanding?
curiouscollecting
The subjects in which your points are in effect would be subjects that don’t keep me from becoming friends. There’s a big difference between ‘how should money be spent’ and ‘does x deserve to live’. For example voting for gay rights doesn’t negatively impact heterosexuals.
curiouscollecting
This is with the assumption that not being friends means you can’t talk to each other or have friendly conversation. I can maintain a connection with someone and talk about things respectfully without considering them a friend. You don’t have to alienate anyone just because they’re not a friend
curiouscollecting
I mean that’s really what my post is saying. Politics can have influence on friendships -> racism, homophobia etc. And there’s room for disagreement -> immigration, tax etc.
I personally believe it’s privileged to say that there’s no political differences that can influence whether you’re friends with someone.
curiouscollecting
No. I do believe being educated is.

I don’t know a lot about the Quran but if someone thinks something specifically that’s just too bad for me to be friends that doesn’t mean everyone in the same group will also think that. I do know a couple Muslims and they already disagree on so much I don’t think I can even figure out what ‘Muslims’ as a whole would agree or disagree with.
If someone believes me and a specific group I’m part of should be killed off because of their religion (extreme case that I don’t think happens but still) I cannot be friends with them. I have yet to find a case like that :P

I have considered I might be wrong, that’s the point of the sub, is it not?
Anyways, I can accept other people think differently, but I don’t believe I have to be friends with people who believe I shouldn’t have rights or that politics have no influence on friendships at all.
curiouscollecting
I guess when it comes to this we simply have different ideas of what being a friend is. For me ‘having a common thing you like to do or chat about’ is an acquaintance, someone I might be friendly with, but not a true friend. I do think it’s interesting you’re happy to play board games with someone who believes you deserve to die but it’s your life 😅
curiouscollecting
This is the type or nuance that could make me change my mind and i appreciate the comment :)

Who said anything about having to ask or pester? If I know a classmate openly shares nazi quotes because that’s what they believe in that directly impacts the fact that I’m not gonna be friends with them even tho I didn’t ask or pester anyone. You don’t have to already be in a friendship and find out in order for it to influence the type of bond you have or are gonna make
curiouscollecting
What I’m saying is that politics (in general) have an impact on friendships. That is NOT the same as saying every single difference in political opinion is relevant or that accepting a difference like that is ignorant or privileged.
curiouscollecting
I’m not even from the US nor did I specify it was about who you voted for, simply what your beliefs are
curiouscollecting
And I’m agreeing
curiouscollecting
‘Making every waking minut about politics is boring and not something people do in normal friendships’
I never said that. I’m just saying that politics, whether directly or indirectly, DO have impact on friendships at least somewhat. Even if it’s just a tiny little fraction, that’s still some impact.
curiouscollecting
There’s a lot of assumptions in here. Just because I think political views influence friendships doesn’t mean I think their opinion isn’t allowed to exist or that those people aren’t allowed to vote. I also don’t ‘hate’ anything I don’t agree with simply because I don’t partake in friendships with those people.
curiouscollecting
Exactly this, you worded this much better than I did
curiouscollecting
When I say different political views I don’t mean ‘if you voted for this party you’re an evil person’. Your political beliefs don’t have to be tied to a specific party, even someone who doesn’t vote can have political beliefs.
curiouscollecting
‘It sounds exhausting to have to actually deal with politics because it influences your daily life’ yeah almost as if that’s the point 😂
curiouscollecting
If me and my friends believe that minorities are people (value), we wouldn’t disagree on whether they deserve basic human rights (politics). Again, they’re not the exact same but they do reflect each other
curiouscollecting
That’s what the post body is for
curiouscollecting
I have pro life friends who don’t believe someone should have an abortion but can accept that some people do and don’t see them as murderers. Kind of like vegans who don’t support eating meat but can also see that some people do as long as it’s from their own farm. Shit like that
curiouscollecting
I am pro choice and I’m friends with people who are pro life and people who are pro choice but I don’t think I could be friends with someone who’d disown their daughter for aborting a rapists baby for example. I’m okay with nuance and differing opinions but there is limits to that
I didn’t classify people who think differently as ignorant or privileged, I said people who think politics don’t influence friendships whatsoever are ignorant and privileged.
Also ‘without even asking how I came to my opinion’ and ‘not leaving room for the possibility that your view is the one which is missing some information’ are interesting takes considering the whole point of this post is to be challenged and get other explanations :P
