Yeah? Did you read what I said? I believe politics can have an impact on friendships. The title says you’re ignorant/privileged if you don’t believe that. I didn’t change any view.

curiouscollecting

With direct impact I mean your rights actually being taken away, not just talking about it

curiouscollecting

I’m not understanding the first part so I can’t answer the question. That sounds like you’re against democracy altogether ?

curiouscollecting

It doesn’t bother you whatsoever if a friend tells you they think you shouldn’t be allowed to live life as any other human being? /gen

curiouscollecting

But I didn’t say the group they’d be politically affiliated with would be the issue but the actual view itself.

curiouscollecting

If someone’s ideas directly impacted you you wouldn’t be able to ignore it because it has a direct impact. The fact that it doesn’t impact you directly would be a privilege. However this is just getting into such a teeny tiny amount of situations that I figured we could let that be

curiouscollecting

I’m not in the US and I’m also not talking about votes, but beliefs. This ‘hypothetical bigot’ is people I grew up with.

curiouscollecting

I guess a lot of people here (you included) simply have a very different idea of what it means to be friends. We absolutely don’t have to agree on everything but if one of us felt the need to hide the true opinions around the other than imo that isn’t a true friendship (yet), simply a good acquaintance

curiouscollecting

But I’m not necessarily talking about the vote, I’m taking about the belief.

curiouscollecting

Friendships aren’t a political debate in itself, I can have respectful and meaningful debates with people without being friends on a personal level.

curiouscollecting

It’s about the specific views, not the party or candidate they voted for.

curiouscollecting

I’m a little confused by your last sentence. ‘Maintain friendship but not as deep as a friendship’?

curiouscollecting

Okay I personally won’t be friends with someone who votes against the rights of a race. That’s more specific and more nuanced than ‘blue or red’ which aren’t even a thing where I live. You’re comparing this to racism.

curiouscollecting

I didn’t say every political debate is a reason to end a friendship

curiouscollecting

‘Everyone pretty much agreed you can kill it at the beginning of that process’ ehh my family would like a word with tou

curiouscollecting

Honestly fair point, I could have made that more nuanced but I do believe that in a way that is a privilege. You’re able to ignore the fact that someone believes your rights should be taken away and that’s not a position anyone can afford. I do think that that is rare so I’ll give that to you :)

curiouscollecting

That’s honestly a fair point, but in a way it will always be political I’d say

curiouscollecting

Well to an extent I simply believe you’re right, only someone making an informed decision about their own friendships doesn’t necessarily mean someone else might be in a position where it’s possible to choose the same way. I do think from here on we get to such extreme examples I can simply tell you you are right and there is exceptions :)

curiouscollecting

That’s not what I said?

‘Politics have impact on friendships’ and ‘not every single difference makes an impact on friendships’ don’t contradict each other.,

curiouscollecting

To a certain extent. If a friend of mine believes illegal immigrants can be shot (politics) they can’t possibly believe that immigrants are equal (values). Politics can say something about values, that was the point I made.

curiouscollecting

Yes I’ve experienced this. I was raised in a conservative Christian surrounding

curiouscollecting

I didn’t say it should

curiouscollecting

Yes being healthy is objectively a privilege? I’m privileged by having food and education. There’s different types and levels of privilege.

curiouscollecting

Honestly? Being a bisexual woman with gay friends having had a miscarriage as a teen while raised a Christian somehow invites a LOT of people to share things haha.

curiouscollecting

I’m not an American BUT the things you haven’t come across as much and are considered extremes to you actually aren’t that uncommon in my surounding. I was raised in the belief that gay rights should be abolished and know lots of people who still hold on to that belief. I talk to them, I can have respectful conversations with them, but I can’t personally consider them true friends.
