The flickering shadows? That seems to be a bug in the game. It's annoying but had nothing to do with server load.

Fans don't work if they're just circulating 35 degree heat around the room

wOlfLisK

Sure but our heatwave reached around 90f outside and due to our house design many houses reached 100f for weeks at a time.

wOlfLisK

Blizzard do not release official player numbers for their expansions and haven't since WoD. There are no numbers. Also, end game content is irrelevant when talking about player numbers. There'll be a correlation but it's definitely not linked.

ETA: And not everyone in the US has access to AC.

The number of homes in Austin that have AC is 99.6%. Yes, technically speaking, that's not 100% but you still have it. And while you might be used to having your AC set to 100f, that doesn't mean it'll be comfortable for anybody not used to it.

wOlfLisK

Ok, sure, now turn off your AC for three weeks and see what happens. Yes, there are parts of the US that are hotter than the UK but 99.9% of homes have AC in those places. Here in the UK you can't escape the heat, you go inside and you're now 5 degrees warmer than you were outside. It doesn't even go away at night because 6 hours of darkness isn't enough for it to cool down.

wOlfLisK

Parts of the US are muuuuuch worse to be outside than the UK during peak summer - you step outside and you feel like you’re simultaneously melting whilst breathing in water from the humidity

Yep. I'm not sure anybody would say the UK feels worse than, say, Louisiana but in Louisiana you can escape the heat by going inside. In the UK, you go inside and now you're 5 degrees warmer than you were before.

wOlfLisK

Yeah, America has higher temperatures and similar humidity in some places but over 99% of houses in those parts have AC. Here in the UK it's 14%, and that's after a few years of it rising quickly. Combined with the fact that our houses are designed to keep heat in and its not uncommon for our homes to be hotter than outside. It's just impossible to escape the heat and that's the real issue.

And no, basements are exceptionally rare. You might get the odd wine cellar in a manor house but the average Brit won't have anything like that.

wOlfLisK

The heat is definitely higher but one very important thing to note is that the percentage of homes with air conditioning in Austin is 99.6%. Louisiana is over 99%. Here in the UK it's 14%, and that's a figure that has skyrocketed over the past few years. The heat might be worse in Texas but you have a way to escape from it. In the UK it's hot when you go to sleep and still just as hot when you wake up. Our houses turn into ovens that trap the heat and refuse to let it go. Outside it's worse in Texas, no doubt about it, but I'd rather be there than here in the UK during a 35 degree heatwave.

wOlfLisK

Yeah, I fully get that on paper an American heatwave is worse but holy shit is the UK just not built for it. It's hot, it's humid, there's no air conditioning and our houses are built to keep heat in through the greenhouse effect and heavy insulation. Maybe the heat isn't as bad as the US but there is just no escape. I've spoken to plenty of Americans who've said the UK is worse even though it has a lower temperature and humidity from what they're used to.

Not pointlessly, it was a marketing gimmick, the point was to sell Yorkies. Guys would buy it because why wouldn't they and girls would buy it because they're not going to let a goddamn advert tell them what they can and cannot eat. The entire thing was a tongue in cheek joke and never taken seriously.

wOlfLisK

It's not doing great but "breaking negative records" might be a bit of an overstatement. It's not exactly BfA or Shadowlands, it just has some issues.

wOlfLisK

That's probably for the best, I wouldn't suggest a stress test for a brand new player. Everything will be wiped and there's a lot of "how far can we go before something breaks" that's currently happening behind the scenes.

wOlfLisK

I wouldn't mind if they expanded northern EK to fit more zones in tbh. Stormwind has 4 entire zones (5 if Riverglades is now part of them), the other kingdoms have... one at best? Other than Lordaeron which technically also has 4 I guess. I know the rest of them are all currently in decline in Classic but they are still kingdoms that were once roughly on the same level as Stormwind and I'd love it if we could get more content to really delve into what they've been doing to rebuild. They should expand the area and give us a few extra zones around the Alterac/ Hillsbrad area.

wOlfLisK

Hmm, I'm also on CachyOS and have this issue. Maybe something in this build broke shadows on Linux somehow?

wOlfLisK

Unless you need to find a warlock trainer :(

wOlfLisK

WoW and WC3 started development around the same time, I feel like the original plan was probably to have Nordrassil be the Night Elf city but when the WC3 devs locked in the "blow up Nordrassil" plot point, the WoW devs had to pivot to make Teldrassil instead and just copy+pasted what they had over to the new location. That would explain the ruins at least.

wOlfLisK

SW has an annoying layout but top tier aesthetics. Org sucks to get around but has pretty weak aesthetics (obviously, all personal opinion but Alliance cities are just better than Horde cities imo).

wOlfLisK

Just imagine how much it would have cost to make a tunnel that goes to another continent. It cost the UK and France almost £25 billion (in 2026 pounds) to make one from the UK to France, a tunnel that effectively goes from London to LA would bankrupt entire continents. No wonder Stormwind didn't have the money to pay the Stonemasons if they were planning to make free public transportation between SW and Darnassus.

wOlfLisK

SW was definitely the main non-Dalaran hub by the time I started in WotLK. The only times I really went to IF was for seasonal events and it was always less busy than SW.

wOlfLisK

Honestly, it's been really smooth so far. There's been some lag at times but nowhere near what I'd expect. Obviously, that doesn't mean it won't break on launch but I'm hopeful.

wOlfLisK

Honestly, at this point it's almost jarring when I play games like Path of Exile and see it spelt the UK way. I love it but it stands out so much after 20 years of seeing armor and honor 😭

wOlfLisK

It turns the sub into more of an echochamber than it otherwise would be but I would take that over absolute drivel being pushed by bots simply because the community can't dislike it.

wOlfLisK

No, the Skyborne are Highborne elves. Highborne were the Elven upper class and some of these left to Quel'Thalas to become High Elves. Skyborne are not High Elves, they just share a similar history with them.

wOlfLisK

Yes, I have offered a mechanical reason. The mechanical reason being that this is a multiplayer world that's sold on the idea of being immersive. Seeing dozens of Tauren Mages and Warlocks breaks that immersion because it goes against established lore. Sky Elves do not break that immersion because it adds on to established lore in a way that makes sense. Now if they'd said "All Skyborne canonically joined the horde" but make it available for both races for gameplay reasons, that would be the same as giving Tuaren mages and warlocks.
