This is not at all the point here but it really bothers me when people refer to the 6 million number when calculating hitler’s evil.

6 million Jews, yes. But also 5 million Romani, communists, poles, homosexuals, disabled people, and other undesirables.

The holocaust was not singularly focused on Jews and citing the 6 million figure erases 45% of those killed by the holocaust.

Not to mention deaths from the war itself in Europe, which is 35-40 million.

So something like 50 million in toto.

There is a strand in genocide studies, and thankfully this is losing adherents now, that the shoah is the only ever “real genocide” in history. And I think it’s important to push back against that because the extermination campaign was so much broader than that.

I found that I made friends by becoming a “local” for a week. I tend to habituate to things quickly so… found a restaurant I like? Found a pub I like? Go to both every night.

Broadly speaking I think for me, compositions fall into two main camps: textures and figure/ground. I think about this a lot bc I like to take photographs of textures and double expose them against figures to recontextualize but no one cares what I shoot.

Now within figure/ground you might have greater amounts of context (eg a landscape) or greater emphasis on figure (a model shot with extreme f/1.2 bokeh).

In photo 6 here, it’s not a texture or an abstraction, so what is the figure and what is the ground.

If it’s used in a clothing advertisement as another poster said, then the swimsuit top is the figure and her body is the ground.

But without that context it’s just a picture of someone’s boobs. And I find that to be voyeuristic more than artistic without some clear other artistic merit.

ie the shot is missing something that makes it separate from extremely soft core porn. It’s a picture of boobs.

This is sort of a classic assigned reading for undergrad anthropology majors.

The crux of the argument is that pigs fare badly in hot arid environments, so Judaism and Islam prohibited pork because it caused disease, and later justified it via theology. Christianity spread out of the desert so no problem with pigs there.
